Depends on the area. Out west here, when on a roadtrip, the gas stations can be very few and far apart once you're out in the wide open boonies. I'd rather shoot for filling up every half tank or so than be sorry about it later. lol

As for the OP question, I've never let any vehicle get to zero before. I refuse to go closer than 1/4 tank typically. lol

Agree that the 1/4 tank rule is a myth now. Especially on a Toyota. I've changed only a few Toyota fuel pumps and the majority were the 2 speed Tundra pumps.

I've been an import tech for 10 years and worked on domestics for 4 and I changed probably 200 Chevy fuel pumps.

My issue with low fuel is less weight over the rear axle in the winter. In canada we want every bit of traction we can get, even if it causes taco lean

Also when traveling the risk of highway closure means the need for long idling, so I wont drive past a gas station outside of the city with less than half, but thats a big rule anywhere for different reasons.

I went thru pep boys with a crap magnet, got it all
I ran it out of gas on purpose. I got 32 miles past the "0" (or 55miles past the low fuel warning)

I have been running it to "0" this whole trip (Los Angeles to Boston) and getting over 20 gallons in the tank, closest so far has been 20.5 GallonsIMG_0456.jpg

    Your milage may vary!

agreed. My wife ran her car out of gas and the pump had to be replaced. When the tank gets too low, the pump gets hot. Mechanic told us all about it after shelling out several $$$.

Usually what happens is the pump gets hot. And Then the customer fills the tank to the brim with "cold" gas. I've had more pumps fail on customer cars right after filling an empty tank than I can count

I usually fill up at 1/8 tank in my truck. Today I filled it up, clicked off at $28.75 from 1/8 to over full. Cheap gas FTW!!

Just to add some excitement to this. lets talk about overfilling. When the pump nozzle clicks off, that´s all you need. Overfilling can cause gas to get into the evap canister and may cause some emissions/ventilation issues.

Why would you constantly run to 0? Bought the truck and can't afford gas now?

Give me a break, cars run out of gas every day, do you really think the manufacturers havent figured this out? I suppose if you sat there cranking it when you know its out of gas, well thats on you.

I truly wanted to know how many miles I could get after the warning message.

Road trip! picked up an old Triumph to restore.

Temperature was -17 in Iowa last week, being a Ca car I went out to start it in the middle of the night. Wasn't taking any chances. Tested the coolant next day , its good to 30 below.

I don't know, but techs have sure figured it out. Keep running them out of gas. I like making money replacing pumps

Back to OP question. When mine says 0 miles to empty it will only take 18.3 gallons. So depending on mileage I still have a conservative range of 27 to 50 miles.
