That is an incorrect generalization. For example, my 1190 Adventure has the fuel pump in the bottom of the tank.

It's not worth the gamble to find out how far you can go after low fuel light comes on. The fuel injectors are cooled by the fuel flowing in them as they operate running them dry on a hot engine can cause damage to them by distorting them due to running dry in the at temperature engine In addition the fuel pump can suffer damage as well by running the tank dry. Best insurance for long life on fule system components is to never let the low fule light come 1/8 to 1/4 tank refills are best

All of you guys must live in places where there is a gas station every 20 miles or less?

That's the most laughable reasoning for not running dry I've ever heard. Letting injectors run dry in a hot engine will warp them? What the hell do you think happens when you simply turn your engine off after a long drive? No more fuel flow, engine still hot...

When the engine is shut off the injectors are closed the fuel that is trapped in the injector acts as a heat sink to dissipate the heat evenlly at the injector valve face to the surrounding surfaces it prevents over heating of the injector tip. When the injector is run try those surfaces over heat and are subject to warping that results in uneven seating and a disruption in the spray / atomization of the fuel as it enters the combustion chamber resulting in reduced engine performance and eventual injector replacement ....at lease that's what I was taught at fuel injection and pump school. @ USMC Automotive Engine, Transmission and Clutches Training.

Sorry, I'm not buying it. I've no doubt that's what you may have been taught in school but there is damn near zero fuel at the pintle end of an injector, not much heat sink benefit to be gained there.

Old thread... however the 3rd gen Taco has a reserve of 2 gallons after reading zero. If you don’t believe me ask your dealer. The CPU reads zero after 19 gal has been used. This was explained to me by a head mechanic/foreman at Toyota when I asked. I’ve also confirmed with my own tests.

I just went 23 miles after "0miles." I didn't run out of gas. 75% of that was highway. Mostly flat/smaller hills in Florida. Other than a 3inch lifts, my truck is stock. I weigh 220lbs and have about 300lbs of tools/materials in my truck. Hope this helps.

Have any of y'all even changed a fuel pump and noted it's not always completely submerged? Same argument about concerns of sediment being at the bottom of the tank. Every time you refuel, it disturbs sediment (if any) which will get sloshed around and mixed into the tank. This sediment, if any, gets taken care of by the fuel filter. There's also filters at the gas station pump.

    It's a fuel pump, not a piston.

Don’t forget the fuel running through the pump is cooling it as well. While it probably runs warmer it’s not hurting it, the sediment is probably worse depending on how many microns the sock filter is.
