On those questionable slushy days, I leave it in 4 Hi all around. Sometimes take it off on highway at speed and then when slowing to exit in weather, shift it back into 4 Hi no problems.

I was pleasantly surprised to read that when I bought my truck. Before I had my Tacoma, I had a Silverado and the manual stated not to use 4th or 5th gear when in 4lo. I do really miss my manual transfer case

So getting off-road, on dirt roads, on gravel rods, etc. is not a constant, but the OM says to engage 4WH once per month for 10 miles. We have either intense rain for a short time, or no rain for a long time, so driving in the rain once per moth is not assured, either, and we never get snow.

Should we engage 4WH once per month for 10 miles on a straight, dry paved road; a couple of miles a few times per month on paved roads; or something else?

If running in 4WH for brief periods on dry paved roads is the answer, I assume in a straight line only; no sudden acceleration or deceleration; and slower is better, but these are educated guesses on my part.

FWIW, our OM states shift from 2WD to 4WH at speeds under 62 mph; shift from 4WH to 2WD at any speed. No maximum speed for 4WH stated in the OM, but I assume any speed safe for driving conditions is okay.

I would suggest finding a dirt or gravel road to exercise the 4WD

Safe to say I dont go any faster in 4hi in bad weather than I do in 2wd in dry weather.....

The Taco can do it effortlessly in any inclement weather, and that means hard rain too.....

    Do it, do it! :burnrubber:
