I live in Colorado and the scary zone is when it is snowy/icy but traffic is easily > 55 mph. I really do NOT want to go back into 2WD as the speed warning on the 06 says do not stay in 4WD > 55mph.

Anyone have legit facts if it's OK to stay in 4WD up to, say, 65mph?

    Thanks tons!

80mph is fine. Drive as you please. It’s a Toyota not a 1990s blazer.

I drive for an entire month in 4x4 sometimes.

As long as it’s low traction it’s fine.

The biggest wear item is the front u joints, the rest of the drivetrain can take it.

It is a limit on speed for engaging or disengaging 4wd, it for operating in 4wd. You’ll be fine at freeway speeds in 4hi, did it for years in a second gen.

only limit is moving from 2HI to 4HI which is 60mph. You can disengage at any speed.

And as mentioned as long as its lower traction or in a straight line you can run in 4HI till your hearts content.

If people are stupid enough to drive that fast in hazardous conditions let them, dont add to the problem.

Welcome to the I70 corridor during snowboarding season!

If you are the guy going 55 or slower you will become the problem. :)

I appreciate the answers....I have asked various Toyota service shops in COS and never got a decent answer.

Probably because no one wants to be liable, if when they say you can drive fast in 4x4 then proceed to do so then cause an accident crash into a school bus full of kids, and then turn around and say so and so that works at so and so told me that its perfectly fine to drive fast in 4x4 in hazardous conditions on public freeways.

Idk about other years but my 2013 won't go into 4x4 at > 55 on the speedo. It'll beep and holler at you until you get below this speed.

If you're driving over about 25-30 mph having 4X4 won't help you and could hurt. 4X4 doesn't help stop you and it isn't going to prevent you from a skid on a curve, in fact may make it worse. 4X4 is useful to get you moving from a stop or up snow-covered inclines. If you want to drive at highway speeds you want AWD. They are 2 completely different systems. AWD will assist you and could prevent a skid in a curve. But even that won't help you stop.

4x4 locks the front and rear which prevents a rear kick out on throttle. It’s way more stable and I can stand by this.

I’ve never had a step out in 4x4 at highway speeds. Only 2wd does it for me on occasion, with weight with winter tires.

I’ve been winter driving for 16 odd years and I’ve never felt less stable in 4x4 at high speeds in low traction. I’ve had every variety of drive trains.

I feel like people from the old school mentality are afraid to use 4x4.

    Correct. Its in the manual.

There are synchronizers on the output shaft (just like in a manual transmission) that make this shift on the fly at speed possible. Usually its a little less abrupt if you let off the throttle and coast right as you flip to 4hi. Same for coming out of 4hi back to 2hi at speed.

It's very much winter here....I'm trying to engage my AWD drive but I can't find the button? I'm in a 3rd gen so maybe they dropped this feature.

Guess I'll just stick to using 4x4 above 30mph like I always have. 4x4 is useful for more scenarios than moving from a stop and going up hill. TC and 4x4 will also prevent sliding in a curve.

Tacomas have never had an AWD function (boy i wish they did tbh). Its part time 4wd only (4high or 4low) with no center diff

the real issue with staying in 4H, is on curvy roads, when you come across dry clean spots in the road. you don't want the inside tire getting skippy on a dry curve, it can damage the front drivetran.

Best practice to be off the gas when switching from 2hi to 4hi.

Not true. The front diff turning the front wheels will provide some engine braking and drag when throttle is eased off. It will also help the brakes from locking up
If you want to experiment, put the truck in two wheel drive in snow and slam the brakes on, then do the same with the clutch in. With the clutch disengaged, you'll lock up the wheels in an instant.
