The BFG Rugged Trails were really terrible in the rain. And it rains a lot here in Miami so I took them off my new Tacoma right away! (unlike my old Tacoma where I left the Rugged Fails on for 25,000 miles)

I drove mine through New England in 2014-2015. They were well-suited for my needs. If you want to spend more on a tire, you'll get a better tire. It's not like there's any magic between manufacturers, the pricing is generally reflective of the tire's performance (assuming you buy the appropriate tire for your needs). The weather was very cold most of the time (15f) but when it warmed and became icy/slushy conditions I would slip in two wheel drive. No surprises given the conditions, however with 4 wheel drive and diff lock you can get out of a lot. Having a set of chains can get you through terrible conditions even if your tires aren't great.
