Cost cutting, same reason they killed the regular cab and 5 lug models, forces people to buy the more expensive model. The 18's are what $1000-1500 more. Surprised they even sell the SR anymore.

I keep on eyeballing F150's with the NA V6, roughly the same specs as the V6 Tacomas (power, towing, payload, etc)...and I am finding a few under $25K. Think they get slightly better mpg than the Tacomas too.

So the trailer (3500 vs 6800) can 'feel' the difference between a 4 and a 6 but an individual can't.
Maybe I need more dynamics classes.

Don’t bother, friend. Doesn’t impress anyone (speaking for myself) You’ve missed the point, I like my engine more than I like yours. Mine feels better. It is less powerful, but does not feel that way. I do not tow. Neither does op.

I'll give my input as someone who had an (i4 and liked it) and now changed to a v6

If you drive like your average Joe, you will feel a small difference.

If you have a more spirited driving, you will definitely be able to tell, specially flooring it or if you just like accelerating in random sections of the road for fun.

They accelerate the same up until they get to 35mph+ where the V6 starts to pull away quite comfortably.

Compared the 0-60's on both these videos side to side for example :

I’ve never clocked my 0-60, in any vehicle. I suppose that says a lot. But. I drive a 5 speed, and I shift at 3.5/4.5and cruise around 3. Felt little difference.

    .
Or when you need the power it is there.
    I see 10 seconds 0-60 on the 4.
High 6 for the 6 cyl.
    Acceleration is what you feel.
When the 4 cyl has hit 38mph the 6 cyl is at 60 !

I see an almost 3 second difference to 35mph btw. That's quite noticeable, not the same.

I know it’s 3rd gen but I traded in my dcsb 4.0 and my regular cab 2.7 is still here.

Even though there’s so much 2.7 love...
In every thread about 2.7s there’s a guy struggling to validate his 3.5. Yawn.

    I had both 4cyl and v6.

In my opinion go with v6. Dependable, strong, and smooth

I have not driven the 6 cyl taco, so I can’t really comment on a comparison between the 2.

    BUT.

The difference in tow rating is not due to the engine, it’s packaging. A V6 taco WITHOUT “tow package” also has a tow rating of 3500lbs. Only reason I4 isn’t rated for full capacity is they don’t offer “tow package” on those engines. A look overseas will show a hilux with the same 2.7 able to tow 2500kg IIRC which is 5500lbs.

    Food for thought.

I heard you could get em in six speed. Either way, they killed the mood. It’s all about the 5 speed.

I’m getting conflicting reports. I’m not too worried about it, I’ve got mine. But it is sad.

Real sad. Like if McDonald’s stopped selling cheeseburgers sad

Thanks for all the input guys - a lot of different experiences and opinions here which is exactly what I was looking for. This would not only be my first Tacoma but my first truck as well. A poster mentioned renting the truck for a week to try it - a great idea. I might try to save some more coin for a 6 - who knows, anything could happen in a couple months.
