Pulling a empty 5x10 utility trailer weighs about 800 pounds. Trans can’t make up its mind what gear it wants to be in so I put it in S4 to save it from down shifting 500 times in 1 mile. That fixed that problem but at 80 mph I’m around 3800 rpms. I should also mention that this is the 2.7. Just how hard y’all think that is on the engine?

I do the same thing headed up the mountain. I see no reason why this would be hard on the engine.

You really shouldnt do 80 pulling a trailer anyway. Small trailer tires are usually rated for 65 tops.

How far we talking? 20 mins across town: fine. Extended move / road trip: not great, not terrible.

You'll be fine. Your MPG will be terrible, but it shouldn't hurt the motor as long as it isn't an everyday occurrence.

The cooling system doesnt get above 194 on mine even at load. Still I wouldn't go that fast, stick to 65 and it will be safer, and better mpg. I've run 3800 for about an hour and never had an issue, mines a work truck so not sure I care as much as I should. Remember I have the 4 speed so its a little different animal.

It’s fine. I’ve run 3000+ RPM for hours at a time.

In the early 90s slick 50 and dura lube infomercials ran 5500 rpm for long amounts of time with no oil. They were so exited!! But in all seriousness the 2.7 is a sewing machine. Its crusing at 3800 rpm. I wouldn't think twice.

Engine will be fine as everyone said, just speed for the highway with a trailer might be an issue. Although I haven't driven the heavier 3rd gen with 2.7 so I might be a bit better. My truck that weighs 3400lbs wouldn't like that speed with a trailer.
Just be safe and thats the most important thing.

lol people here who have loaded trucks and big tires easily sit at that rpm on the highway, daily.
When I had a lifted 3rd gen with 33s, bumpers, topper, tent, all that crap, I easily sat at 3,500 rpm for hundreds of miles when id make long trips. no issues.

I’ve taken this trailer 1200 miles loaded with 1500 pounds going 80 before. It has full size 15 inch tires and 3500 lb axel. I’m not worried about the trailer. Just about the RPMs I was curious about

Geez, with the v6 auto i have no problem pulling my 2k lb boat in S5 ECT at 70 mph. Only time i hear it down shift is on uphill grades. I don't think the engine turns more than 2500 rpm. I have a 5x10 aluminum utility trailer with 13'' wheels also which can weigh about the same when loaded, but i never let the truck go any faster than 75 mph.

The RPM's aren't hurting anything. Diving 80 will with even an empty trailer will.

Me either, but it isn't good for the truck

Having owned a 2.7L Taco, I can't imagine that 6th gear is useful for anything. 5th gear in the new trans is about the same as 4th gear in the old. The new 6th is soooo tall. Maybe it's useful for going down a hill I guess.

it pulls fine. If u keep it in 6th it wants to shift all over the place especially at higher speeds on cruise and through hills. Put in s4 it’s fine but I was jw about rpms

I did this (Phoenix AZ to Big Lake AZ) pulling a big tex 30SA and a can am 1000R four seater for my dads elk hunt. I was constantly in S3 at 4200 going up the hill. Sometimes you just gotta let the horses out for some excercise. But i am also V6
