Was cleaning house and found a Guidepoint GPS recovery unit that was supposed to go on a motorcycle I no longer have. was thinking about selling it or if the Tacoma is like my old Silverado and easily stolen, well why not install it on the Tacoma. Just dont hear about to many many Tacoma's being stolen.

If someone wants it then it's gone. I'd sell the tracker and not worry about it. That's what insurance is for.

Everything under $50k is easy to steal, and even above isn't hard if you have a flatbed with a winch and a few minutes.

And forget those jazzed alarm systems. Everyone ignores them now, and they are easy to defeat pretty quickly.

My personal preference is to not leave anything irreplaceable in my vehicles and keep them properly insured. And keep a photo inventory of modifications, with receipts.

But, since you have the unit in hand, I'd put it on the most expensive and thief desirable ride in your stable.

Motor vehicle theft is about 1/3 the rate it was 20 years ago. Mostly because of the immobilizer chips in all recent vehicles. If you look at thefts by model year the vast majority of thefts are of older model years without immobilizers. The most popular targets are vehicles with a good parts market - so that means vehicles with a lot of sales volume (Accords almost always top the list).

So if you have a 2010 Tacoma the likelihood of theft is quite low compared to what it was in say 1990 and low compared to older model vehicles with higher sales volumes. That said, as others pointed out you can still steal a vehicle by just putting it on a flatbed. But the fast slim jim and hot wire maneuver of years past won't get anyone going with your truck.

So personally I'd just leave it to my insurance. You are probably much more likely to be hit by an uninsured driver than have the truck stolen and both fall under comprehensive coverage.

There have definitely been multiple Tacomas stolen in Hawaii (Oahu at least)
