How heavy a travel trailer can i tow with a '12 4x4 off road, v6, tow package

    you would be fine with 4100 lbs. most offroad package only came with 3 leaf springs, so you would need to upgrade. gas mileage will suck though. do you have a brake controller

    yes, have a brake controller already........so, upgrade to 4 springs and/or firestone air bags ?

    the 4100 is the dry trailer weight, plus anything else that i'd be carrying, so, i figure 5000 at least.

    I would go with air bags, and weight dist. hitch. take your time and you will be fine.

    No, it was a Uhaul trailer. If i tried to put it in cruise control it kept wanting to downshift, so i drove about 4000 miles without cruise control.

    it drove perfectly smooth, no fishtailing or anything, the cruise was just retarded.

    thats with the 4 leaf TSB springs, averaged about 15mpg, 12mpg going through arizona

    Once you start to conciser the WD system the TW (tongue weight) pretty much goes out the window but you should try to stay close to your trucks max TW. The hitch on the tacoma 4.0V6 is a class 4 hitch. If it was on a bigger truck it could be rated up to 10.000lbs with a TW of 1000lbs. Because of the Tocos lighter weight and smaller drive-train it is rated at TW 650 and a trailer weight of 6500. These numbers are for a single ball mount TW with the MAX Trailer weight. Once you put the WD hitch on it is a matter of equalizing your TV (tow vehicle) and trailer using the WD system and making sure you have a strong enough system to handle the weight you are trying to distribute. You should never go over the max trailer weight rating or truck cargo rating though. ANything, cargo or weight added aft of the rear axle is considered as part of the TW. This is why you adjust a WD hitch with your TV and trailer loaded. When my rig is loaded with bike in the truck and full tank of water with full LP tanks an two Batts. I have to really crank the WD system to get it level but it works fine and my truck handles great. I have never had any white knuckle driving with my rig.
    Using air bags is for a single ball mount with out WD or a heavy cargo load, to raise the rear of the truck. It does nothing to distribute weight it is all still on the hitch or bed and the front will still be light.. If you have airbags and a WD system you should set the bags at the normal setting then adjust you WD system leaving the bags alone. You should not use both of them together.
    As with any towing you must use common sense and think about you, your family and everyone else on the roads safety as you haul. I think my rig is very solid and I do not drive fast, 65mph max. I have dragged this trailer to nothern Maine from Maryland and as far south as myrtle beach, SC with no issues. I do not haul the bike on the long hauls.

    A pic of my rig completely loaded. GCVW 10,552 lbs on certified scale.THe TV rear wheels had 175lbs more weight than the front due to the WD system and I had 3/4" of rise on the front and 1 1/2" of sag on the rear.

    We just got our CampLite TT last November, towed it back to CA from Denver. Luckily I had already installed air-bags, it's a rough ride without em. Our TT weighs 2650 lbs dry. Tows it fine, you can feel the weight, just slow down going fast just burns the gas. Make sure your tires are fully inflated to max pressure. IMG_1774.jpg

    nice rig, i got a wdh, sway bar and just yesterday, the firestone air bags........now to sync up the wdh and firestones.

    Are you towing in overdrive? If so you will cook your transmission that way. Tow in 3 only. When it hunts between gears it heats up the fluid tremendously.

    If you've done this very much (towing in OD) I'd change the transmission fluid and filter at my earliest opportunity. Good luck.

    Man, that TV of yours looks like mine, but you have the dual axle on your trailer.

    I *think* that helps on the tongue weight, as opposed to my single axle trailer. From your pic it looks like I had the Equalizer WDH setup the same way as you, but my rear end sagged more.

    And I don't see what you have for rear suspension. In any case (and I realize a lot of towers aren't interested in this) but the WDH in my limited experience does not do well offroad, even mild offroad. It gets torqued around too much, the trailer side hookups move back and forth and loosen up, the L-bars get bent. Just food for thought . . . . .

    i had to tow pretty heavy with my truck and the main issue was stopping. Gas milage was actually much higher than i expected.

    I went over a weigh scale - loaded the truck had 1.3t on front, 2.5T rear due to single axle trailer and the bed having prob around 800+ pounds attributed to that 2.5t

    This was with all pro exp leafs and id say that anything more than what i had would have maxed the leafs to the point of ridding bumps...

    This truck was pushed to the max i felt to do safely. To stop i had to use the gears and brakes to sufficiently stop with 33s
