I have a 2018 Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro, which has a towing capacity of 6,400 lbs. My family and I are looking in to buying a camping trailer, and I want to know how heavy I can go. I know Tacomas aren't known for their towing strength, but I just want to be safe.

I was looking at a 2012 Jayco with a base weight of 4370, hitch weight 570. The carrying capacity is 2130. Too close for comfort??

WAY too close for comfort. Towing & cargo weight capacities are like fuel economy numbers. Calculated under the absolute best possible to conditions to give the best numbers and help sales. In this case, it will be on a straight, level road, with no head-wind, etc. You should never run more than 2/3 - 3/4 of your maximum capacity to allow for varying conditions. You truck could probably manage that just fine in Kansas, but if you're on your way down Donner pass and you need to stop in a hurry, that's a LOT of weight pushing on your brakes; likewise pulling up the west side of the Great Divide, your going to be in third at 30MPH, and getting about 4.5MPG!

max capacity covers many factors from several perspectives

1 major braking..........yes even tho U get the electronic controller

they NEVER are Very GOOD ALL conditions ( set dry aint even close wet............set level not enuf down hill )

no less NO truck is rated for Hill pulling

Ive only seen ONE !! poster actualy weigh his entire rig & true it was over what he anticipated

so the number chase U present will probably not meet Ur expectations
