I can’t see why Toyota and many other decent mfgs, even industrial equipment mfgs, would go out of their way to add the break-in procedure to the manuals unless there was a reason. I went easy on my truck for the first few thousand KM. Makes sense to me, as there is usually more metal Particles in oils early on as new components wear in/things wash out. I didn’t want to be pushing the engine hard with the likelihood the oil is not at its “cleanest” so to speak. Especially since I purchased my truck right before temps began dropping to below -30c. I’m pretty toasted, but that’s my reason for break-in.

This how to properly breaking a new engine ..

1] start new engine listen for odd noises check oil pressure and water temp for proper pressure and temp

    2] head to dragstrip

3] pull thru waterbox proceed to clean rear tires with a 6k rpm burnout

4] pull up to the starting line and when light goes green shift thru the gears at 7800rpm .once you run thru the finish line the engine is now properly broken in

Well, this has been informative for sure! A lot of opinions out there! Seems like it's a good call to maybe take-her easy, but so long as you're not doing anything too too crazy and not beating it to hell its probably okay not to baby them too much.

Thanks everybody for the input! It is very much appreciated and a nice bit of context surrounding what we've all read in the manual.

Yeah I think I will pass on the brilliant advice from "Motoman." Maybe I'm biased (as an engineer myself) but if the owners' manual has specific information regarding engine break-in written by Toyota engineers, it seems a good idea to heed it.

If that's the case, I have broken in several vehicles on test drives. :D
