In slippery conditions the limited slip wont "slip" and will spin both tires at the same speed, same as a locker.

I have a powertrax no-slip in my truck by the way. I prefer it over a selectable locker actually.

Contact Sandman on this board - he put a TruLoc rear locker in his and last I heard really likes it. Basically a torsen rear end, no switches, it engages automatically when the other wheel slips. Ironically, my Miata has one, my truck does not :)

The Eaton/TRD is a clutch type LSD. If you have a lot of traction (street) and turn, the force between the two tires exceeds the 200ft-lb clutch point and the LSD slips allowing you to turn easily. If you are in the dirt/sand the difference between the two tires won't exceed 200ft-lb and your axle is effectively locked. No snow where I live, but I go to the desert often and it works great. You use a special diff fluid additive when you change the fluid. I have had mine for five years and it works just as well now as when new.

I believe 8.4" is stock. Is the 30 spline non stock? If your setup is stock and a 96-2004 V6 2WD or 4WD without an electronic locker, it should work.
I misquoted the torque slip point. It is 400ft-lb and not 200ft-lb.

but really, in the snow I'd want open diff (or unlocked selectable) or a spool. I have had a jeep with both a spool and a detroit and the automatic locker can be unpredictable.

    .

I file the TRD locker under 'extremely nice to have,' especially since a comparable aftermarket one (i.e. selectable) is pretty spendy. Keep in mind though that they're not without problems and should be tested regularly. I had my motor seize up so the locker would not engage. I took it apart and found salt residue inside. A good cleaning and some grease restored full function.
