Just confirmed that what a few of us are discussing, the AC system blowing ice cubes when in fact, the AC button isn’t on….
I just confirmed in fact the AC compressor clutch field & pulley is engaged & compressor is turning.
Which explains why it’s so cold with the AC off, big question is, why…

Seems like it was overriding you. If it was high humidity, I’m not surprised. I gave up trying to control my BMW X5. I just let it run on auto.

    Measure outside temp.

go to a dealer. Measure AC temp. Done.

    common is 40deg drop.
Do they have enough cooling fans. Did they change anything.

switches by MFGs to different refrigerant like 1234yf, etc is typically done for environmental reasons.

previous Tacomas compressor kicks on if direction is on defrost to dehumidify.

all manufactures compressors kick on while its in defrost...
thats not what were doing here....
ac is off, should be in normal "vent mode"
its acting like its an auto temp control & cooling the air, just like if the ac was on....
popped hood & verified ac compressor is compressing....:notsure:

I know this may sound like a stupid question, but have you cranked the temp control knob up? You didn't mention that and we can miss the simplest things.
It is trying to cool you down at those settings. I know in my 3G, with the A/C off and Auto on, I am always adjusting the temp control knob. I just never notice if the compressor is on.

I totally agree with you, I said that a few posts earlier, probably just auto temp control..
I just wanted to confirm that the compressor does cycle even with the ac off..
This new stuff in my personal vehicle is very new to me & new to toyota..

If you are on auto, ac and compressor is on.

So I just went to the truck to assess everything again.
I verified that defroster is off and it was definitely not on auto mode.
If auto is on it actually displays across the Digital cluster.
Air just coming out the front vents and defroster off, set at 60.
Compressor cycling and electric engine cooling fan on which fan always comes on when Air Conditioner is functioning on all vehicle as thats normal protocol / characteristic of vehicles with electric engine cooling fans.
When a customer comes-in with an overheat I always turn the ac on to verify proper cooling fan operation.
I’m sure it’s still normal, but not sure why it operates in this manner.
I actually emailed the dealer shop foreman with a description, my thoughts, etc, see if he gets back to me...

Yea, with recirculate off, and AC off, compressor should not run. However, it might be tied to engine and transmission cooling. Maybe @Jeff Lange knows.

I dont think theres anything wrong per-say but scratching my head...
Been an master certified engine tech for ford for 35 years, retired last year, I know a thing or 2....
somebody within this thread mentioned a setting, maybe theres onto something, if so, why is it defaulted to this...?
running the compressor everytime you have any air on????
that could lead to fuel mileage issues & premature wear???
Little over the top, but just saying...

The compressor shouldn't be on in those circumstances. Whats the point in having an AC toggle it it's always going to be on?

I know there is a setting for "allow ac in auto". I turned mine off just because I'm not sure what the range of temp is for it determining when the use AC vs Heat and didn't want the system fighting itself. I don't really even use 'auto' anyway. Not sure if it did much but I do notice with or without the AC toggle 'on' that cold air will blow out. With the toggle on it is much colder though.

You may be onto something inregards to the auto on/off feature, I dont want to go look for it or test it...:D
Just spoke to my service writer & he said his wifes venza operates the same way.
If you set the temp higher or lower than the actual outside temp the vehicles systems will do whatever it takes to get the cab temp to your requested temp.
So if it needs to turn the air on regardless that its not in auto mode or ac on, it will activate the ac to accommodate your request....
    It is what it is....

The 2023 Tundra has a lack-luster AC. You have to make 5 adjustments and blast it for over half an hour before it thinks about getting cold. No, it was not "just mine" - they were all like that. So when I hear that the 4th gen Tacoma AC is "too cold" or "cold when it shouldn't be" this sounds like a feature, not a bug in my book.

I turned the auto on/off feature under "Vehicle/Settings/Climate" off. 85 degrees outside, turned my A/C off, temperature down to 66 and it did not engage the compressor nor blow cold air.

The software setting appears to be a permanent auto climate control feature that maintains your temperature setting regardless of other climate control settings. Interested to hear if my findings match others.

I’ll have to do some digging and find that setting, it makes sense to turn it off…
Thanks for the info and being the guinea pig…
And yes, plank you were correct, after talking to my service writer, that’s how he explained it to me
