What is the procedure for removing the oil filter base on the 1GR-FE?

By "removing", I mean only to temporarily push it out of the way.

On several engine bay projects, namely this one, the drip cup has gotten in the way.

    Thanks for any help.

Simply you don't, it has coolant and engine oil running to it and the pros to cons are vastly outweighed. It's just 12mm nuts on studs, but I believe the rad hose is in the way.

For alternators, the best way is to remove the battery first, then pull it out upwards.

You can also remove the sway bar and remove it downwards.

It's the whole oil filter housing you would have to remove, the cup isn't separate.
This is just an old one I have laying around from an engine swap I did at the shop but that's what the assembly looks like.

    Thanks.

Why is there engine coolant running to it?

It doubles as an oil cooler.

If you have the tow package the engine oil cooler sits on top, it has coolant running through it.

If the drip cup is in the way, can't you just take out the oil filter stud (24mm I think) and move it aside without disconnecting the coolant lines?

The oil cooler seal might need replacing though..

I do have the tow package. It’s hard to imagine that any real cooling happens in that little device.

Heat exchangers operate using the same set of thermodynamic principles. Thermal energy is always conserved in heat exchangers. The direction of heat flow is always from the fluid with higher temperature to lower temperature.

It's one of the components that boosts the tow rating on some Tacoma's to 6,500 lbs, so it's doing something. I would leave it alone. If you break or tweak it trying to move or remove it, it will cost you nearly as much as the entire Towing Package ($650) for just this one component to replace it, with possible risk of oil and coolant leaks while you are waiting for it to either come in or come off national back order.

    Give it a wide berth.

If had to remove it more than once because of a “drip cup”, I’d be looking for my Dremel:rofl:

Ironically the filter location is a blessing. It’s why working on the original 1gr is easy and the update 1gr is miserable. Timing cover completely gets blocked by the oil filter on the 4runner.
