I'm actually in Snohomish, last year was King, which probably explains why it's half as much as I was expecting

Here the extra 1% (our Penny for Pinellas) only applies to the first $5k of the purchase.

And we (voters) keep re-upping on the Penny for Pinellas because it's spending is very transparent and goes to lots of things voters like.

Damn, I didn't know that at all about leased vehicles...

I've never leased and probably never will, but good to know.

In Missouri one pays sales taxes on any car purchase -new or used. You pay on the price paid minus the trade-in or private sale price you received. Also you have to pay license and registration fees yearly. Still more - the vehicles' value is computed yearly so you pay personal property taxes . Missouri and its counties get you in THREE different ways!

I think they changed the law around 2010ish. But any vehicle bought before that required you to pay your local county sales tax at the time of purchase. It varies between 6-8% but most counties are 7%. Then each year on your birthday you pay an Ad Valorem tax which could be $25-$500 depending on the vehicles value.

After the law was changed it is now 7.5% at the time of the purchase regardless of the county. Then just $20 each year on your birthday for a new tag. Since my Tacoma was purchased prior to the law change I pay about $175/year in Ad Valorem tax + the $20 tag fee. Every other vehicle and trailer in my driveway was purchased after the law change and only cost me $20/year each.

I don’t think it’s a sales tax. I think CA terms it a use tax and it is based on the sales tax rate for the address it’s registered to. Where I live the tax rate is 7.75% but it runs to 10% plus in some areas depending on local enhancements. Trucks are also subject to commercial plate fees and weight fees. My 19 is about 550 per year. Not a fan of how it’s done, but that’s how it works and there is little you can do about it. It goes down a bit each year, but it’s a really small amount. If you have a vanity plate, there is a fee and if you have a specialty background, there is another charge. It can get expensive quickly. If you have, say, a 1 ton dually with a diesel, the fees can be shocking.

When you buy a vehicle in Ca. you pay whatever your local sales tax is. That in not a use tax, it's a sales tax. When you register every year, that's a registration fee, not technically a tax. When you purchase something, whatever it is, from out of state, then you pay a Use Tax on that item, well, at least I do. Have to declare that on the quarterly sales tax returns. It's so much easier to buy in state, patronize local businesses and not have to worry about declaring that separately.
