    40 vote(s)

I’ve heard this 3 month rumor too. But wasn’t sure if it was accurate. The 6MT I purchased last week was built in 12/2021 and delivered last week for what it’s worth. I’ve also seen 6MT with 01/2022 build dates that are in transit so this information alone doesn’t seem to jive with the production run every 3 months for MT. What I can say from my experience is that deposits for a place in line seem to be less than fruitful, despite routinely following up on my part. The truck I landed was just luck and hadn’t been reserved.

I’m highly skeptical about how dealers allocate those that reserve vehicles w/o VINs (eg future allocations). Only one dealer ever offered me any vehicles (I had deposits at 3), after telling me I was #1 in line for the 6MT builds. All builds offered lacked several items I wanted and was the wrong color. The dealership was allocated 6MTs during this time that matched my desires perfectly with the exception of color, and I wasn’t offered these. Seems like no rhyme or reason to me, and I don’t like processes w/o accountability or transparency.

Thanks for the info on the back-to-back build months for MT; hopefully that is the case.

Ultimately, the game that is played over here in Hawaii is our only option (only one Toyota dealer with multiple locations), unless I want to play the mainland allocation game and ship the truck (no thanks). Good thing is, Servco Toyota here is an MSRP only dealer, no markups. Also, Servco Toyota is not a part of Toyota USA, and they don't work on the allocation process like the mainland does. They basically get what they "order" from the factory. Placing a refundable deposit on an order over here is really the only way to get a new Tacoma on Oahu right now. Your wait time varies based on what you order (MT vs AT, 4WD vs 2WD, etc.). I was going to order a Pro, but the list for this year is full, and there is a waiting list for next years list.

I was looking all over before I put my deposit down with a local dealer. Had a few dealers who told me they would not sell out of state due to shortage and at least one was hitting non-local buyers for an additional mark up.

If you have the actual VIN you can track status through the method described a few pages back on this thread.

Anyone know if you can request a color change to an allocation or is it just what it is - assuming the latter but curious nonetheless

While I haven't heard the exact 25 miles range, I've heard multiple other reasons. Too many requests. Too far away. Outside of the region. Outside of the state. It really is up to the dealer, though, if they decide to pursue an allocation request with you.

I've been told by 2 different dealers that a color change request can be made on an allocation, but absolutely is NOT guaranteed - and in most cases, simply isn't even likely with the way this market is trending.

This makes sense - probably so many things to keep track of, it's a way to get the number of customers down to a somewhat manageable number. Crazy times

This could have to do with the banks they like working with. They partner with banks and credit unions to get kickbacks. That's what I was "off the record" told by a dealer in NW Indiana anyways.
