Dealers will tell you "if they find something" they can possibly work out a trade with other dealers. even though this does happen, its rare and its pretty obvious why. There just isn't much, if any incentive to trade with other dealers. The first dealer I contacted which is one of the larger ones in the area has never contacted me back after 8 months even with having a 500$ deposit.

What exactly are you looking for? I had specific must haves (around 6) and could find a truck with 5 of them but with something I couldn't live with. I ended up deciding on a Limited trim since it has everything I wanted, even though it had things I could live without. I shopped for the specific color in the Limited, and found a dealer 300 miles away with an allocation and temp VIN.

I'd suggest using Auto Trader to search for Tacomas with what you are after. Right now, you basically are in line for a vehicle. If you first find the vehicle, your wait time will likely be less than 4 months (likely just 2-3).

Before I started shopping, I thought I could just go to any dealer and order what I wanted. That's not how this works. Dealers get allocations offered to them and they don't make "orders" like most think.

Anyone please correct me if I am wrong.

Thanks for looking mine up, Rod. It got here several days early. Picked it up yesterday afternoon. Had to run some "errands" and I've already put 100 miles on it in 24hours!

I got some news regarding my truck, although it's not the exact package and trim I was looking for, I have a new 22 Tacoma TRD Sport in Army Green that I agreed on at another Toyota dealership here in Hawaii. The truck is 2 weeks out from arriving on island and I am beyond excited. It has a permanent VIN and the VIN shows it to be a week 18 build, so my new truck was born quite recently. I've registered it on my Toyota app and the vehicle doesn't show tire pressure or anything at the moment so I am anticipating that it'll be here sooner.

My salesperson at the 2nd location told me that Army Green was gonna be discontinued for the 2023 year model and they're introducing another color.

I ordered my 2022 SR5 Trail Edition through our employee lease program at work (TMMK employee) on Friday. From asking around I’ve heard 4-6mo but with the supply chain issues we’ve been dealing with I wouldn’t be surprised if it takes longer.

I’ve narrowed it down to 4 things that I can’t live without. Tech package with LED headlights and fog lights, Black out package, All weather floor mats and door sill protectors, and TRD skid plate. If it has more stuff on it I really don’t care. It has to have those things on it though.

everything but the tech package can be added at the dealer. If you are requiring it to come from factory, well, good luck.

There are very easy ways to find a truck if you’re willing to travel. Every week there are more and more trucks popping up on autotrader which are ahead of even being built. Toyota is ramping up production, and most dealers are seeing 25% more vehicles than they were a few months ago. The shortage is coming to an end rapidly,

another thing…. STOP paying over MSRP. By the end of this year production should be very close to full. (Not pre pandemic full) but the new full they’re looking to be at. There will be plenty of trucks to choose from and some sitting on lots again. Refuse anything over MSRP.

Be decisive is my advice to all, you can be flexible but also know what you absolutely want.

One thing my salesman and dealership staff really appreciates is when customers build their vehicle online and print the build off and bring it in with them. It gives them something tangible to work with and keep on file.

Also, keep it simple if the things you want can easily be added later by the dealer or you can find exactly what you want in the aftermarket.

For example, the only things I was specific on was Offroad DCSB 4x4 V6 model ( very common), manual transmission (less common), and Lunar Rock color (somewhat flexible on). Basic stuff, I did tie on lift kit and mudguards but the dealer can do those.

I think keeping my request fairly basic as I'm willing to do or source my own aftermarket upgrades got me a fairly quick turnaround on an allocation with a premium package as a bonus.

Others have had to hit up multiple dealers, I only approached two in Wyoming and only made a deposit with one. But they are also competing with higher volume dealers in northern Colorado. Denver is only 90 minutes away, lots of dealers in between.

this made me chuckle a little because I provided sales people exactly what I wanted.
Model 7545 with tech package, 3 color options.

they’ll call me and ask me what I want or ask if I would be interested in a Tundra.

How does one know when they get a permanent VIN? Does the app update? Does the dealer have to notify me? Currently have a temp VIN with a week 19 build.

I will be selling my Cement Gray soon, since I need the cash, but I'm loving the Blue Crush and hope I can pick one up in a few months. And I had no idea factory orders were possible.

Rides/drives a lot nicer than I recall from that short test drive months ago. It feels huge after driving a RAV for 6 years. I have an SR5 and the tech stuff it has seems to be overkill. The owners' manual is the size of a novel. Overall I'm happy with it. Only thing left is to drop about 1500 bucks on a hard tonneau cover, steps, and mud flaps. Maybe some sheep skin seat covers....hmmm:D
