Trail editions seem to be in same boat as Pros.

which is, delayed? Yeah, because on my sheet when you search the temp VIN, it shows order date = 10/21, “date of first use Dec 31”

It was a 21' Long Bed Sport 4x4 Double cab... Got switched to a 22' automatically.. I am $700 below sticker at the time and they are still honoring it... Unfortunately now, they are all $3,000-7,000 above sticker to put an "order" in, so I feel locked. I messed up, I wish i would have thrown more lines out like you said.

That’s a tough situation. Although one may be able to argue that while you have a great price, they technically haven’t ever produced a truck for you to buy so is it legit? Like basically, does the price mean anything if you’ve waited the same amount of time as Pro reservation holders for a sport, which is a relatively common allocation?

Is really everyone around you 3-7 over? If that truly is the case sounds like a flight to a neighboring state would be worth it.

I really hope something happens soon for ya, that’s brutal.

From what I read (can’t remember where) they were setback. Why? Not sure but maybe chip shortages or just Toyota wanting to make a grand entry with the Pro and Trail Editions

Edit: They do get set back at times. Mine was supposed to be built the last week of September but wasn’t built until October 23.

You can still throw lines out to other dealers and take the first one that suits you. Most dealers give a refund if you do not accept the allocation. Don’t feel locked into a dealer. They only want your business and do not give a rat’s ass about you otherwise. If your allocation comes in after you have decided on one sooner from somewhere else, trust me, they will have no problem selling that vehicle in today’s market.

All solid points, i'll be pretty upset if the color doesn't get changed tomorrow when they find out... If it doesn't get changed, I think i'll need to get on the phone again, and might just have to accept the fact im going to be paying 3,000 above sticker.

Or fly if possible. It’s a pain but sounds like in your market the only way. The only market I’ve heard being that bad is California, it took me a ton of work but I did find some. Problem is some of the MSRP dealers are small town dealers so they prob don’t get much at all.

If this helps anyone…my sales rep sent me this to confirm my truck got reserved and is allocated to them…notice the build dates in the VINs to the far right…looks like Pro and Trail are delayed based off how all the others are scheduled to be built now (makes sense given being allocated now). So corroborating guesses from above.

That build list lines up pretty well with what I'm seeing in local inventory--not much in the way of ORs, and mostly RWD in both Sport and OR trims seem to make it to the dealer lot.

I already made my purchase, but have been curious to see if inventory has loosened up in the last few months. It hasn't. It seems like Toyota started off the 2022s with a significant influx of DC OR and Sport 4WD, and now is building out the broader range of trims and features (SR & SR5, AC, RWD etc.)

I guess I'm glad to have moved on my Tacoma when I did, because I'd still be waiting to get allocated what I wanted, it looks like.

    Just a PSA:

Curious about what the ‘22 Trail Edition is? Interested in getting one? Want to eventually have a place for sweet, sweet delivery pics? Keep reading!

Started a specific thread for ‘22 Trail Editions, so we can congregate and swap intel on a sub-level for what is a pretty specific trim (package, technically)

So if you have one on order or are looking for info, come on over! More to keep some specific info centralized. Still planning to monitor and post in this thread too.

I’ve seen two trails for sale locally already. One is being built this week. Dealer offered it to me, but I decided no on the black as I’ve ordered a white pro.

You have to look it up as a plain ol’ SR5, and then it is a sub package add-on, not a specific model. Most dealers don’t even know this and the sales guys sure don’t. I keep pointing it out to them in their own inventory and they will respond after a bit of back and forth and thank me for pointing out they have a Trail to sell. My sales dude was convinced the Trail was canceled until I made him aware they just sold one down the street at their competitor this past week.

How do you guys get a VIN and then look at a dealer’s allocation? I just have seen the Trails on their own inventory on their public website for sales.

I would love to see if my dealer has a white pro coming in anytime soon. If not… I’m probably going to lose all three of my friends here, but I may just buy a new or very lightly driven and low mile Lexus GX 460 and swap on TRD wheels and AT tires and at some point I’ll put on an old man emu Prado suspension setup.

Once they got the allocation in for my Trail, they sent me the VSPEC of the truck. The temporary VIN is on there, has a letter in the last 6 characters. You can plug it into the VIN lookup tool on Toyota’s website. Once it throws an error it’s being built and you can ask your salesman for updates.

I think you’re referring to looking up trucks that you haven’t reserved yet. You can plug in any of the VINs you find on auto trader etc. to see if they’re built yet or what they have on them.

Pretty sure my dealer has a white Pro coming in. Unfortunately I am in New Jersey.

Interesting... I just got off the phone with a dealer about 45 minutes away that says they have an "allocation pending" that can be "built to my specification" for a TRD Pro. Since that isn't exactly how the system works, they have my curiosity piqued. I even told the person on the phone that it was my understanding that a color change could be requested, but the engine/trans combo could not be changed.

"We may or may not need to charge Market Adjustment depending on the availability of the vehicle". Their words. Sigh.

... and they want a $2,500 NON-REFUNDABLE deposit because, according to them, it is MY TRUCK at that point. Oh, I can get my money back (eventually) if the truck never materializes, but I am locked in at that point. If I cancel or fail to complete the sale within 3 days of the truck being delivered, I lose my deposit.

Thoughts? ... because I am SUPER skeptical at this point, but they are a larger dealer in this area.

I have an appointment for Sat morning to go talk to them directly.

This is a tough call. I understand that you are confident getting your rather high deposit back regardless of what they tell you. This is my opinion, if Towne had told me my deposit was not refundable, I would have looked elsewhere. They did have a condition on that refund, only in the event that the vehicle I left the deposit on was not to my liking, or became delayed too long. I set a timeline for this purchase, not them. If I purchase another vehicle from a separate dealer, they will not refund my deposit.

I am right there with you in your skepticism. I'd be nervous as well. Definitely talk to them. this will never hurt.

As for mine, temp VIN still works. According to it, this is the build week. Fingers crossed for tomorrow.

The only way I see this happening if it were me is they said “built to your specifications”or a refundable deposit. And what the hell do they mean by "We may or may not need to charge Market Adjustment depending on the availability of the vehicle"? That tells me they intend on making a “market adjustment” and they are telling you this so that when they do raise the price they have you over a barrel. I agree with @technoalchemist, be skeptical. Get what you want in writing if they demand a nonrefundable deposit. I would get online and start calling other dealers between now and Saturday, especially if you are able to travel.

If the dealer expects you to commit to a non-refundable deposit, then the dealer absolutely has to lock in the OTD price inclusive of any options and add-ons.

No way you should put money down if they have freedom to set 'market price' upon arrival. And if it is a binding contract, make sure you don't sign on anything until it is absolutely clear what the terms are.

My bet would be they'll be looking to make a mutually binding deal, but will want a significant markup. Head in there on a full stomach, well-rested, and be ready to walk if they won't hit your number.
