So the allocations list will drop and the dealers will attempt to snag certain builds but there is no guarantee at that rate, as much as I really hope that the 2022 does get released just for all the members who have been lied to by dealers I am having a hard time believing they will have any 2022’s on that list. There might be a chance but I don’t think there will be. Way too much production still going on with the 2021. I just hope everyone can have patience and realize that a dealers goal is to secure a deposit on a hopeful future sale and that’s it.

How much is the leather through the dealer running you? Is that through a 3rd party?

$1000 installed with red stitching, 3rd party. They use Katzkin, I prefer Roadwire but for the price, installed, I'll take it!

    Hello all,

Been perusing your forum for the last several weeks as I’m looking at purchasing my first truck and pretty certain it will be a Tacoma. Not really in a huge hurry and with a new model year coming out eventually figured I’d start talking to a local dealer around that as opposed to finding my way into a 21.

Unprecedented times and all that but was wondering what everyone’s comfort level is with a dealer holding a minimal amount of money in the grand scheme of things without any real promise or plan for a vehicle to show? I am working with a local, decent size, dealer and below is the info I’ve been given.

    • I am interested in a 2022 TRD Pro. No big color preference but do not want the new neon lime or whatever the official name is.
    • Dealer obviously can’t give a timeline at this point on when they could expect them. Again, not a real concern for me at this time.
    • The process they have decided on is a wait list after putting a minimal deposit down mentioned above. Given the Pro really doesn’t have options, they will get what they can in, in whatever color, and work their way down the list. If you don’t want what shows for whatever reason; color, not what you thought it’d be, not the right time, etc., it moves down the list to the next person.
    • I am going in later in the week to speak again more in person and would be higher up in the list if I decide to proceed.
    • Dealership is larger but do not appear to be a chain which is semi-common around these parts. Given the current vehicle climate, any concern that they don’t survive and deposit is lost? At the end of the day, not a lot of money but still not money that you’d like to just hand away.
I’ve purchased several cars before but not really in this method so it’s a different undertaking in my view. Wanted to get other’s thoughts on it that are more in my position rather than speaking to friends who either are not looking or really don’t care too much about it. Ha

I would go for it, but use a credit card. Here in California deposits are refundable for any reason. A credit card will make it easier to get your money back if there is an issue, and of course you can get the miles/points.

Does anyone know when the latest you could order/allocate/whatever on a 2022 might be? I'm stationed overseas until June of next year, so I won't be ready to order until Feb of next year. I'm just hoping that won't be too late to get the truck I want.

Thank you for your service. I don't think we can give you a good answer. I thought I 'was good' for a 2021 but am now looking like a 2022. In 'normal times', the spring would be a good time to order for a summer build, late summer delivery as the model year ends. Toyota doesn't have 'production months' like other manufacturers-where you could say you wanted your allocation scheduled to be built in July or August. Dealers 'request allocations' and hope the factory provides a build identical or similar to the request. This threw me for a loop-I have ordered vehicles from other manufacturers without any issue.

Well that’s a tricky situation. You may be able to come home and snag one up right off the lot but no guarantees with everything going on. The other option is to keep and eye on how the vehicle market is when that time comes and you might be able to place a deposit somewhere between March and May and if the timing is right it will be there or close to it when you arrive. You also have the option to place the deposit and when it comes you can buy it completely online and have a family member or friend swing by and grab the keys. There are endless options for you depending on the situation. Right now people are still placing deposits on 2021 models and the allocations keep on coming twice a month.

Start communicating with a trusted dealer around Feb-Mar to see what timeframe they have had for allocations and go from there. Check around the area your coming back to and see what their inventory looks like. Actual in stock and not extended inventory, if they show a steady amount coming in then that one may have a better chance to secure an allocation and if they don’t have many trims other than SR’s or just 2WD for a while I would steer clear unless that is what your wanting. Hopefully some things will be somewhat back to normal but it may be like this for quite a while.

Thanks for your support! And yeah, this allocation system is definitely odd.

Yea, I've never ordered a car before but I know exactly what I want and I don't know if it would be in stock on a lot. I guess it could be though. I bought my 2013 Tacoma new off the lot when I got back from a deployment. But now I've got dreams of driving to the mountains in a Blue Crush or Barcelona Red TRD-OR with the 6MT. Thanks for the tip on checking inventory to see what dealer might be able to pull the allocation. I didn't think about that.

Worst case, if the Taco falls through, I'll pay cash for a first gen Lexus GX and go to town on mods.

Nope. Time to embrace patience. Based on what I have heard and others are expressing, my guess is the first 'allocation confirmations' on 2022s wont happen for 1-2 months. I would be surprised if we went past Thanksgiving but not surprised if we went up to it. I predict we will see the first 2022 deliveries early in 2023.

I'm in the same boat you are. I "got in line" for a 2022 Pro, Manual Trans, Magnetic Grey Metallic at the end of last month. Knowing it would be a 2022, and since the dealer didn't have the ordering info for 2022 yet, the sales agreement price is "MSRP." Being flexible on color will help, so will an automatic trans. I'm sure you have already found the great info on this site about Toyota's bizarre vehicle "ordering" system. I made a $500 refundable deposit. I can cancel for any reason. I was told that once the 2022 ordering info hits the dealer there will be a window of opportunity to make changes to the order. With my insistence on a Pro with a manual trans, I was told to expect about 8 months. I'll be looking for something big from the Easter Bunny.

Larger dealerships usually have more allocations so that's good. And you're willing to wait which is good. However, the pro is the rarest trim so hopefully you're prepared to wait awhile. What id do is put refundable money down at a few dealerships with alot of allocations (whoever gets what I want first, gets the $$). Dealerships will survive this no issues... they are making more money per car and have more demand than ever before. I'd just be shaking in my boots if I was a salesman as dealerships go more toward the route of being a "delivery point" rather than a wheel n deal shop

Yep, that’s essentially what I am working off of with my dealership.

Handed over the deposit and am in line. I am the second overall person on the list with the person that is first on the list only wanting the new lime green color. So assuming anything that is not that color comes in and that guy passes, I will have the opportunity to buy that for the agreed upon price.

So, we’ll see how it goes. I’m not really expecting it this year but who knows.

I noticed you have a TRD Off-Road Access Cab with a manual stated as your vehicle. Is that an option now? Is that only in Canada?

I hope you meant deliveries in 2022 not 2023. I don’t know if I could wait a whole year. I’ve tried being patient since July and it’s been hard don’t know I can do a whole year.

Yes thats a Canadian option only. From reading the latest posts looks as if I will be waiting quite a while to get my hands on it.

I think I saw someone mention 2022's not showing up till 2023...I'm thinking 22's will show up late 21 and early 22. No way it'll take till 2023 as I think Tacoma is one of Toyota's priority?

Thanks being said. I found a local dealer that would go to MSRP on a 22 Off Road or Pro so I left a deposit for a Army Green build last week on 9/8. Doubt I'll hear anything at least until next month as to estimates or what's happening in general. But specs:

Army Green, Double Cab, short bed, auto
    Premium package or
    Advanced tech package
    TRD skid plate
    TRD suspension kit
    TRD exhaust

Basically said order me the package that'll get filled faster (prem vs adv tech) and also said if they get a lime 22 Pro let me know because I might just take that. I'm leaning the Off-road though...just like that army green.
