My OEM battery in my 2010 just gave it up tonight without warning. It made it about 46 months. Didn't have any real choices for replacement and had to go with an O'Reily's Super Start, cost about $110.

OP where are you looking at going for your trip? Somewhere really remote? I wouldn't replace mine before noticing that it's giving me trouble. Even if it shits the bed you can usually find a boost and grab one at the next costco/auto parts store. It could last you another 3 or 4 years. Run it till it dies. I am always doing roadies through 5 hr sections with no auto service places so I get the preparedness thing but a boost is usually easy to come by.

Batteries today rarely give you trouble to warn you. they just quit. Perfect one start...dead the next. Places in Big Bend NP, Canyonlands, etc; or points in between don't offer many opportunities for a jump from passerbys.

Had oem battery die at 5 years in a motel parking lot in Salida, Colorado back in 93 on my Mazda pickup. Motel owner and I pushed started and I drove straight to auto parts store.

Consider myself extremely lucky - previous night I was tent camping about 5 miles off the highway in the national forest.

Best idea... if in dought... carry a new one, but do not install till you need it... that way you get all the juice outta the old one... and only put in the new one when required.....

Batteries are perishable, meaning that with their natural self-discharge they will slowly discharge. This discharge will cause a gradual layer of lead sulfate to accumulate on the plates of the battery. This is called sulfation and is a very common problem for batteries that are in storage and will eventually kill them. The amount of time will vary with temperature and the battery type. Heat speeds up this process and cold retards it. A simple way to prevent sulfation is to keep the battery fully charged or periodically recharge it. The same applies to jump starter batteries.

For more information on sulfation, see Section 16 in the Car and Deep Cycle Battery FAQ on www.batteryfaq.org.

Great job!!! The cold climate contributed to the long life, but what else did you do to maintain this battery?

I replaced my battery in my 1st gen, which I owned for ten years, twice. I had absolutely NO warning prior to the failure of both of them. All was well, then there was nothing! And I mean NOTHING! Typically there is a clue that the battery is starting to fail, but not on my 1st gen.....

At 4 years now according to build date and it is starting to go. Going tomorrow to see about a new one. Of course I will be getting a better than factory since I have all my lights, Cb radio, bed outlet and internal constant all hooked up to it.

My 04 still had the original battery when I sold it, was 8 years old at the time. My '13 is 19 months old and hope it lasts just as long.
