4cyl tacoma owner here. I bought the 4cyl bc of its reliability, and also didn't tow anything substantial. It's a fairly slow engine, but I love that these things will run for 200k miles without anything going bad. My buddy has 250k miles on his Taco and even the water pump still works fine.

Things have changed, and I now require the ability to tow some big boy stuff. I won't be towing very often, perhaps a bobcat here and there a couple times a year across town. I'm a Toyota fanboy, so I'm looking into buying a Tundra.

My question is, is the reliability of these trucks the same as Tacomas? How long can I expect this thing to run without a single hiccup? Any advice is appreciated, and I apologize in advance if this is a duplicate thread.

I've never really heard any complaints about the tundras other than crappy fuel mileage, ide say they are just as reliable as the tacomas, maybe more so.

I’m prepared to dish out more money for fuel consumption, I just don’t wanna be replacing water pumps at 100k for example

theres probably a good reason they have been using the same platform for the past 13 years, its reliable.

Maybe a Tundra forum or Google as you will get more anecdotal experience there. You seem to know what you’re looking for as most help you’ve shot down.

They’re extremely stout! My dad kept his 08 model for 325k miles. It spent its entire life loaded down and riding on its overload springs. Only thing he had to replace was a cheap solenoid it the trans at around 250k. He’s got over 200k on his 14 Tundra with no issues. Loaded down just as much as his previous truck. The Tundra with the 5.7L is very reliable!

Water pump and IAP valve are two of the bigger issues with the Tundra. The water pump on my 08 went around the 56000 mile mark but other than that the truck was rock solid

Damn it. How long has the new pump lasted thus far? How much was the pump? Did you do the work yourself?

Ran the truck for another 19000 miles before selling it; water pump was fine at that point. I paid roughly $1k Canadian to have the pump replaced at the Toyota dealer

My dads got an 08 with the 5.7 4x4 170+k no mechanical issues and he’s not a diy ocd person like me. If you’re in the north east they rust though.

Which year Tundra? The 1st gen is a LOT different than the 2nd gens. Both the 4.7 and and the 5.7 are extremely reliable. If you want to talk 1st gens let me know.

Tundra's are super reliable, my buddy has a 2017 TRD pro tundra and it just turned 100K. Not a single issue. Just that the V8 does drink a lot of fuel.

Tacoma’s do too for that matter :spending: - there’s a lot going for the 2nd / 3rd gen Tundras. If I wanted just a truck to do everyday truck things and occasionally tow the Tundra is what I’d go for.

You won't be dissapointed. Head over to this pages sister forums, Tundras.com and search away. There's the small issues such as the Cam Tower Leak but it's not much. No rusty frame issues. I went from a 14 Tacoma DCSB 4.0 to a 20 Tundra TRD Sport crew max. Yeah it's a lot bigger of a truck which makes for in town driving slightly inconvenient at times, but you get used to it. Mixed highway driving is around 16-17 depending on how heavy your foot is. Towing is anywhere from 8800-10k depending on your set up. V6 is no longer an option on the new Tundras. They're great trucks that you wont have to worry about reliability issues on.
