I told my wife I wanted to go there with my fishing pole and ask them were the "self serve" isle is. She thought it would be a good way to have a bunch of little China men kick my ass.

The date on it is the sell by date, not the use by date unless stated otherwise.
Like milk I find it lasts a week after the sell by date.

TRUE... and to elaborate on your information...
READ THE MILK BOTTLE. It should say

    SELL BY :

That is not the same as an expiration date. The SELL BY is the date the stores have to sell it by...

Milk is still good after that paticular date!

**gawd, I had a hard enough time convincing my husband that the milk was still good after this date. If that meant EXPIRATION DATE, Why would the stores sell it up until that date? Does that mean as soon as buy it you gotta take it home, you gotta throw it away?**

Depends on the food, depends on how cold your refrigerator is, depends on how well packaged the food is, and depends on what micro-organisms (sanitation) are in your food when they package it at the food plants.

Say for example, lunch meat that you get at the deli counter.... your lucky to get 1 week out of it before it starts smelling 'sour' and feels slimy. I know ham doesn't last as long as lebonan balogna. And if you buy pre-packaged stuff....it lasts longer than the deli-counter stuff. Again, those micro organisms and sanitation.

Carrots, they last what seems to be 'forever'. I've never seen a carrot go bad. They just flimy. I throw 'em out when they're flimsy. But - they're probably still edible.

You just gotta use your own judgement. Look at the food & smell the food. If it doubt - throw it out.

It can hang out in my fridge for one day, next day leftovers, then it hits the trash can. I too have experience in food poisoning :puke: i was thinking I wasn't going to make it, it got ugly.

This is not entirely true. Most cartons of milk and yogurt now a days say "Best by" or "Sell by" which is not an actual expiration date. Its just the a date set by the companies safety standers where they can no longer sell it by that date. Typically the actual expiration date is about 7 days after the sell by date.

Remember though, that milk is only good up to 10 days once it is opened. So even if the date says that the milk will not expire in 12 or so days it will go bad before that date if you opened it up the day you got it.

I purge the fridge of old leftovers once a week. The night before the trash goes out. If it smells questionable or doesn't smell at all....it's gone. With 2 youngsters, dairy products aren't around long enough to expire.
