I’m at 29,000 miles and was researching what I maintenance servicing I can do myself.

Read here that first plug change is at 30k… but for the previous generation tacomas. 3rd Gen calls for first change to be at 60k as per the manuals. Correct me if I’m wrong in that.

Been watching videos on spark plug changes for our truck. Driver side seems doable but definitely a pin in the ass for sure.

Anyways, I’m planning on doing it myself at near 60k.

To the people who went way over 60k for their first plug change, how was the condition of your plugs? And how many miles you out on them? Did you replace with OEM or iridium plugs?

50k? I dunno yet actually. 50k seems like a good overhaul number. Yea. 50k!

I haven't looked up the how to's on this truck yet. Only have 3k on it. But I'm sure its easier than my previous 5.4L Triton lol. I think I saw a post the other day of someone who pulled them at 60k and all looked good.

I'd went 83K on original OEM spark plugs and recently just had them changed out.

I went like 120K on the original set. They definitely showed their use but if I absolutely had to keep them on for whatever reason they definitely could of gone some more miles.

60K is what the Owners Manual calls for.

What made you guys hold off on the plug change at 60k? If it ain’t broke don’t fix it type of thing? Holding off untill you felt symptoms of a bad plug?

I changed them out around 58, 247 miles. It's not really too difficult. Watch the videos, research, buy the spark plugs from an actual Toyota dealer so you know you get the right plugs set at the right gap. Take your time and enjoy. I would rate this project a 3.75 of 5 on the difficulty scale. 1 is changing a flat tire, 5 is an engine swap.

    I went 80k.
worth at least checking them to make sure they are all tight. I had a loose one. Folks here say its not that uncommon.

Probably if you own some tools etc, I was just trying to ball park it. I don't want some guy stripping out his threads and looking me up...

My 1997 Taco went 181k before I changed the factory plugs, wires/coil packs. MPG's were dropping and this was the clear winner.
MPGs went right back to what it was seeing back when it was new.

Replaced the second set of plugs around 240k to show my son the procedure as he is the main driver now.

wow. How did they look when you pulled them both times? I mean, 240k and still going is a pretty good indicator you weren't wrong, just never really thought it was good to let them go so far.

First ones came right out after I was told that they would probably be fused to the heads.

They were gone. The triple tips were eroded way back, so the gap probably really stressed the coils.

The second set was showing some wear, but could probably go another 10k-20k miles.

Just did a 2nd gen tacoma had about 90k miles. They looked pretty well shot as they were original plugs. I'd change them when recommended by Toyota. When plugs get old, it makes the rest of the ignition system work harder to create the spark needed to run the engine.

Just changed mine at 90k because I may or may not have forgotten. Looked good when they came out.

Have any of you guys replaced OEM coil packs with aftermarket? Been looking into the RIPP supercharger Coil packs which cost a steep $300 … wonder if it’s worth the costs

No. It has been said that the OEM coil packs are great performers, even for boosted applications. Don't waste the money.

BTW, if you do a search around here, you'll find that those coil packs had a couple failures.
