How long should a new Tacoma last?

I just had my 2011 Tacoma inspected and my mechanic and I have a decent amount of frame rust on the drivers side. I bought it new in 2011 and it only has 58K miles on it. From what I understand, once the rust starts its hard to stop. Now I live in the rust belt and have a place in the northern Outer Banks where 4WD is required to get to my house. I spend a week there once a year and I’m pretty anal about maintaining it especially after I come off the beach. This is a huge disappointment since I was expecting that it would go much longer. I’m going to trade it in while it still has some value probably on a new 2019 Taco except this time I’m going to get some rust proofing Krown or Zeibart.

The Question I have is… How long should I expect my new truck to last under the conditions I’ve stated.

I would think if you keep a good eye on it periodically you should be able to get many many years out of it. But you gotta stay diligent since you know where you live is bad for rust issues. Don’t worry man if taken care of well it will last till the wheels fall off.

Fluid film is your friend in the rust belt...apply it twice a year and your frame will remain cherry.

5-7 Yrs before you need to replace hoses with steel lines, pretty much anything that's neither aluminum or stainless steel.

Your exhaust is stainless so it should last, but idk about the muffler hanger hardware, or if it will hold it up.
The frame should be fine (we hope), but install a good set of all weather mats inside because as you step inside the vehicle with boots full of snow/water you'll be bringing in salt or snow melting chemicals, and you don't want to be driving the Fred Flinstone style.
I would treat any hose with a steel line combo with fluid film and clean to re-apply as often as weather allows or you're able to

    Good luck
    Cheers!

Older Tacoma’s were plagued with frame rust issues. I’m not so convinced the 3rd gen will be in the clear as of yet. There really isn’t an answer to your question because we just don’t know. With proper care the frame should outlast the life of the truck.

Saw fluid film at my local Lowes the other day for $9.88 a can. Check there if you need a quick local source, but don't leave your truck untreated in rust belt areas.

A lifetime, if you treat it right. My dad (91) still drives, my grandpa's 1917 Model T that he bought brand new.

Rust belt you say? Yeah I live that life.
DO NOT under any circumstances have ziebart or anything of the rubberized variety of undercoating applied to your vehicle. I use Rust Check every year (similar to Fluid film). Don't want to take my word for it?

Atleast 2 years of a salt environment.
Probably longer though since mine hasn’t crumbled into dust yet.

Your truck is already 8 years old, consider that. First gens and second gens up to 2013 I believe have well-known frame issues. You probably have at least 5 years or so before it starts becoming bad enough to be a safety issue. That's 13 years right there, already better than most domestics.

I'm confident Toyota has learnt regarding frames with the third gen but only time will tell.

My 1996 has 412,000 trouble-free miles, frame is solid as a rock. I too was wondering how many miles to expect out of my 2018.

I joined this forum because I also just discovered frame rot/rust on my 2011 Tacoma. The dealer said I have a golf-ball sized hole on the passenger side. Toyota customer services has been zero help and didn't even make any recommendations. Anyone else try to contact Toyota?

Do I need to replace the whole frame with a hole already? Or is welding a plate over the hole (suggested $1400 repair from the dealer) and using a preventative corrosive spray sufficient enough to stop the problem from reoccuring?

Soooo frustrated with Toyota right now. Have owned a toyota since 2001 and never had an issue until now. Thanks all!

You are not alone in your frustration over frame rust, as you will see in the numerous threads about it on this forum and Toyota should be ashamed this problem still continues from the 1st generation to now the 2nd.

I just read on a thread from a person that works as a master mechanic, saying his inside information tells him the 2011 Tacoma will also be cover under the limited service campaign "LSC", so if it's possible for you to hold off, Toyota may be extending coverage to 2011.

Sorry your here under these circumstances, but welcome to TW!!

Never heard of a frame collapse due to rust on a Tundra/Tacoma or any Toyota product due to a rusted through frame.

I got about 5 miles from the dealership before a check engine light appeared. Ymmv

(Just a bad O2 sensor from the factory, not a big deal ;)
