The problem with exceeding GVWR is that everything starts to get stressed and worn at accelerated rates. Your brakes, suspension, steering were all designed for a certain range of operation and loading down the bed really strains that.

You might not care in which case stop reading, but if the goal is to keep your Taco until the wheels fall off then it's better to haul less, or buy a small trailer you can tow which affords you the ability to carry MUCH more weight.

I think the Taco being a mid sized truck that is about the same size as some older full size trucks (97-03 F150) gives the impression of equal capability, but that just isn't the case.

I've done it. It sucked. Up and down up and down shoveling mulch in an out of a wheel barrow.

I do bags now, much easier on the back.

i cant like this post enough, word for word. Two years in a row i did bulk, and it was so much more work. If you wait for the deals which i usually do like 4 or 5 for $10, sometimes bags are even cheaper than bulk. I drag the bags over and dump'em. If i ever have giant beds and i have a tractor with delivery, i'll switch.

Our trucks are in the total payload range of 1200 to 1300 lbs. maximum. Can they carry more, maybe. Is it safe, doubtful. Should you do it, your call. Would I carry the max payload regularly, no way. It really doesn't matter what springs, shocks, bags or other equipment is added, that payload rating doesn't change. Something else will wear and fail in time. The axles, bearings, brakes, clutch, frame and other components are designed for that rating and not too much more. With all the requirements for fuel economy, emissions and price point, why and where would Toyota give us anything more than what was required to meet the specs?

Don't get me wrong, within it's limits the Tacoma is a good, reliable and useful truck, however, if you push those limits regularly you should consider a bigger truck or a trailer.

By the way, about one yard of dry mulch will fit in my truck and comes right up to the bed rails. I can roll the tonneau cover over it and latch it.

The correct answer is your truck will hold 1-5 fewer bags than you actually need.

Yeah i meant bulk mulch. I can get access to a trailer but it's a pain to go get. But it is an option

I dont mind the work. I'm 31, i'm still young and i consider it a good workout. But everyone is different and I can see where bags would definitely be easier and cleaner to deal with.

I can get black mulch for 26 a yard. that would be like 12 bags of mulch.
