Before I got my current 5hp two-stage 60 gallon compressor, I was using a 2hp-ish 20gallon. It worked OK but would run out of beans and long hoses didn't help. I found that putting a 5 gallon portable tank you would use to remotely fill a flat tire, on the end of the feed hose and running a short 3/8" hose from it to the tool, I got better results from my impact and other tools. The large qty of air close to the tool helps its performance. In the long term, the compressor capacity isn't changed but you get a little more time between cycles, plus the surge capacity so the tool doesn't starve.
