    The latest!

Went on a 750 mile drive to Baja and back this past weekend... On the way home, my E-Light came on (at 305 miles from the fill up) and I was at a station in 2.6 miles (about a pint of gas from the E-light on)...

I put in 17.1 gallons, so 17 gallons is a pretty fair standard for when the light comes on, giving us 4 gallons to go on from that point... and at 18 mpg (what I was getting on the highway yesterday) that gives us a maximum of 72 miles to find gas from the e-light on point.

Today... I drove near gas stations until my gas gauge needle was squarly over the 1/4 tank line and filled up... topped off... 13.1 gallons.... or 8 gallons left.

From what I have seen so far, and rounding to the nearest whole number...

3/4 gauge = 16 gallons in the tank (down 5 gallons from full)
1/2 gauge = 12 gallons in tank (down 9 gallons)
    1/4 gauge = 8 gallons in tank (down 13)
    E-Light = 4 gallons in tank (down 17)
    E line = 2.5 gallons in tank (down 18.5)

Take your gas mileage and multiply it by the 'down' gallon numbers to see what your odometer reading would be (provided you zero it at your fill ups): Example) at 18 mpg...

    3/4 gauge = 90 miles (5 gallons x 18 mpg)
    1/2 gauge = 162 miles (9 x 18)
    1/4 gauge = 234 miles (13 x 18)
    E-Light = 306 miles (17 x 18)
    E-Line = 333 miles (18.5 x 18)

The e-line figure may need some adjusting, as I don't often go that far down before topping the tank. The more input the better. If you could top off as soon as possible after you reach the empty line, and let us know... great!

Now, see how close your odometer is to the various gas gauge lines. I made a chart and put it in my sun visor with odometer readings at 15, 16, 17, 18, & 19 mpg (my truck's range)... and I can gauge my fuel economy as I drive.

The important thing that gj and I are doing here is confirming that our gas gauges are reading about the same at each line on the gauge.

From what I have seen so far, and rounding to the nearest whole number...

    *F to 3/4 uses 5 gallons

3/4 gauge = 16 gallons in the tank (down 5 gallons from full)

    *3/4 to 1/2 uses 4 gallons

1/2 gauge = 12 gallons in tank (down 9 gallons)

    *1/2 to 1/4 uses 4 gallons

    1/4 gauge = 8 gallons in tank (down 13)

    *1/4 to E-Light uses 4 gallons

    E-Light = 4 gallons in tank (down 17)

    E-Light to E-Line uses 1.5 gallons

    E line = 2.5 gallons in tank (down 18.5)
    =======================================================

After several comparison fills at various 1/4 tank and E-Light levels the amount of gas in the tank has been within 1/2 gallon of the above numbers.

    Gauge Reading:
    3/4 tank (16 gal) = 15.5 to 16.5 gallons in tank (down 4.5 to 5.5 gal)
    1/2 tank (12 gal) = 11.5 to 12.5 gallons in tank (down 8.5 to 9.5 gal)
    1/4 tank (8 gal) = 7.5 to 8.5 gallons in tank (down 12.5 to 13.5 gal)
    E-Light (4 gal) = 3.5-4.5 gallons in tank (down 16.5 to 17.5 gal)
    E-Line (2.5 gal) = 2 to 3 gallons in tank (down 18 to 19 gal)

Please fill up at the various gauge/ light points and report your findings!

Today, with the needle over the 1/4 tank line, I put in 13.3 gallons (again)... Now it was over the 1/4 line for a couple of miles... So, saying a rounded off number like 13 is close enough. But, for the second 1/4 tank fill in a row I put in 13.3 gallons was pretty cool.

I would sure like other Tacoma (2nd Gen) drivers to share their gallon (or liter) fill up amounts (from specific gauge marks or E-light on point).
