There is real world data and you too can go fill up when your needle is over the E line. My bet is if you do it asap when on E line that you will add 18 gallons, proving there is 3 gallons remaining (+/- 0.5 gallon).

Nope. 18.3 or 18.4 gallons at the light every single time.

    OK, good research.
Then, what you indicate is, they CHANGED the point the light comes on, giving you one LESS gallon to get to a station.
Now, these are real gallons pumped in and not your onboard computer telling you, right? So, do you think (until you actually do it), that there are only 2 gallons when your gauge is on the empty line?

There's 100% German in my bloodline, and I am an engineer. I have a fundamental need for precision. So yes ... anything I claim is backed up from a several sources, and always subject to refinement in the future.

I will try to fill up from the E line at the same pump that I calibrate my scangauge to. It might take a while, but I will report back my findings.

Also, the ECU gets screwy around the E line ... so I cannot trust the scangauge reading (it jumps around erratically). I'll just take pictures of my fill receipt and the pump meter. And .. likely 42 other things ...

SO after the light turns on and drive till is said ZERO miles left THATS when i fill up, and most the time its around 18 to 18-1/2 I put in the tank..
so there is still 2 1/2 to 3 LEFT in the tank till empty >21.1 tank< (ok folks EMPTY is always when the truck stops moving and you have to get the can out )
I have Driven about 50 miles PAST the zero to go and way past the needle and put in 20ish in ... (didn't want to go that far) and thats the lowest iv gone with it.
as i know there is still almost 3 gal left in the tank at "zero"
My wifes ford focus gets about 10 to 15 MAX past zero to go .. so 1/2 gal in there i think, as it gets around 32 miles/gal

i want to drop the tank and BEND the arm so E is E + 1/2 gal, - they are trying to help the stupid people that don't know when to get gas and have the tanks OFF by 3 gal....
call it a reserve if you want but it is still wrong.. read above what E really is... thats like having you speedometer of by 5 to 8 so you don't speed and save gas .. its still not correct ..and not there job..

anyone know how hard it is to drop the tank?
    and drop the mike.....

I'm more concerned with where 18 gallons cost $48

We are the same, I think... I am half German... and the rest is a bunch of other stuff! Anyway, accuracy and precision play a big role when I write about Baja and history! It kills me to find typos in something I have read a hundred times, as well! Always have others read your work before it is printed... I did but still, stuff gets by. The brain plays games with the eyes!

Anyway, figuring these fuel gauges out and figuring how to explain A-TRAC and the traction controls here on TW has been a major undertaking by me and I know others enjoy the work!

Don't we all have auxillary gas tanks mounted on our truck beds?

That's scary that the light didn't come on until you were down to just 1/2 gallon left!!!!

I'm guessing there was topping off involved.

The trucks can take an additional 2+G from the first click.

It's not how full, but how close to empty that turns on the light. It doesn't know the miles you drove, only the fuel level. Unless that too was changed?

Yes. I fill my truck up all the way each and every time. Reason: I like to have it full to better calculate. I agree that it take additional 2+ gal after first click but first click is not calibrated. I find that by doing this I can get cocsistant numbers and feel confident about driving long trip where gas is sometimes hard to find. Knowing what I have left by look at guages and odometer I can mentally calculate how much I have left and how far I can drive. Maybe I am anal but it comes from flying jets in the Marine Coprs. Not too many mobil gas stations up there so you got to believe the instruments.

18 in some states... 16/17 in others (*Cough Alabama). Personally I find 21 to be a better bet as they are less immature and you can take them to the bar for drinks without getting arrested!
