How many keys did you get?

Does the non-fob key unlock the glove box? If it does, it is not a valet key, just a basic transponder key. I have not found the existence of any valet key on a 2021
Tacoma, although you could take the metal key out of the smart fob, essentially making a smart fob a valet key. But that won’t work on manual transmissions, as they come with the “H” key only, no push button start.

 

I honestly dont know because i pretty much hung that key up right away when I got home.

 

The fob IS the valet key. It opens and runs the car but doesn’t open the glove box. So much confusion on this forum.

You should receive two fobs that have removable door/glove box keys, and a traditional key.

There is a chip shortage. Some people are getting an IOU in lieu of a second fob. Once the chip shortage is resolved Toyota will send your keys.

Not to split hairs here, but the fob becomes a valet key only AFTER the metal key is removed, being essentially convertible, but only if the owner takes the step of removing the metal key. MT owners with the “H” key have no such option.

 

Many of us, received two fobs (inside has the removeable key), but didn't get the traditional key.

 

You said some does that mean if you got 1 RKE key, I May not get the other. My dealer has been less than helpful and neither has Toyota care I haven't gotten a straight answer from either yet.

 

My understanding is that you will have to wait until they can restock and send you the key.

My traditional key locks my tailgate. Not sure if I tried the metal key in the fob. 2020 I also received 2 fobs and the traditional key.

Are we still discussing this? Mileage may vary based on model year of your third gen (especially the current model years with all the shortages). But it's

2 fobs and 1 key for TRD and above models
1 fob and 1 key for SR5 and below

generally speaking.

 

The dealer has it's own stock. Toyota is likely conserving at the factory. They may or may not still be sending keys out to dealers. But a dealer still needs to have keys available if a customer needs to replace a key.

Sending a single key out is a way for Toyota to keep sending new trucks out and keep current customers happy. There's nothing nefarious going on other than dealers not giving customers the information, or, sending them a second key eventually.

 

It's not as simple as just sending out the second key in the mail. The truck's ECU has to be programmed for each key. That would involve a service visit back to the dealer. When I had spare keys made, my dealer's charge for the programming was $155 (regardless of the number of keys). Now, in the case of a late-delivered key, I suppose that would be considered warranty service and the dealer would be reimbursed for the programming charge by Toyota. The bookkeeping alone becomes complicated. I can see a lot of this falling through the cracks and people ending up not getting their keys unless they make a stink about it.

Yes for tail gate, but I since then installed auto tail gate lock.. that metal? I’m assuming just an ID tag of some sort. Not sure

That’s the code for making new keys if you ever need one. Keep the code tag somewhere safe outside the truck!

 

Same here, one fob, one valet. That was on March 28. Valet key has a tag on it stating I will be contacted. My son bought a taco after seeing mine. Same thing different dealer. They said cars and trucks are sitting at the plants with no remote keys.
