How many keys did you get?

Same here, one fob, one valet. That was on March 28. Valet key has a tag on it stating I will be contacted. My son bought a taco after seeing mine. Same thing different dealer. They said cars and trucks are sitting at the plants with no remote keys.

 

2021 purchased in April - 2 fobs

 

I received 1 fob and 1 valet key. The dealer referred me to Toyota USA. Roy G. from Toyota USA, responded to my email and told me the dealer's customer relation manager would call me and he did. He told me that the Toyota USA has not explained when the keys will be available and who will be sending them. He was surprised that Toyota USA made him call me when they know, dealers have no information at all. I emailed Roy G. at Toyota USA again. Told him the dealer had no information and they were surprised they were put in the spot when the can't help me. Roy G, emailed me back asking me to call an 800 number and to provide the case number to the person on the phone. I feel I am being given the run around instead of addressing the issue once and for all.

 

It's all a question of money. You can have all the keys you want as long as you're willing to shell out the money. I discovered that there's no real shortage since the dealers have them in stock. It's just that they're not giving them out free.

Pretty vague IMO. Can't even give an estimate? They are going to keep making keys for vehicles to *sell*, they already got my money.

 

Purchased my 2021 Toyota Tacoma Double Cab on March 18th, 2021... still waiting for 2nd key promised coming from Toyota Headquarters. It's B.S. to spend this kind of money and only get 1 key plus a valet key.

 

I purchased a 2021 TRDOR Feb 28, 2021. I got two Fobs and a tailgate key. I have the smart key system. Wife just took delivery of a 2021 4Runner TRD PRO end of January and she got two smart key fobs but no valet key, not that it matters since you cant do anything but unlock the door with the valet key anyway on the 4Runner. It wont start the vehicle.

 

Like yourself, I purchased mine at the end of March. It looks like those that purchased new in March or later seem to be affected the most.

 

well, for those of us that only got one smart key (and a valet key that may not even start the truck)... and after waiting 2 months after I spent $40,000plus for my new 2021 Toyota Tacoma TRD Off Road Double Cab... I called Toyota and the news is that yes someday I may get my 2nd smart key from Toyota. I Looked into just buying one but at $226.17 plus somewhere between $145 and $300 to reprogram I guess will wait and see if Toyota will make good on a promise that I will someday get a 2nd key? Very frustrating that they don't communicate a little better with their customers about this issue?

 

Maybe run it by a dealer and see if you brought one in to them, would they waive the programming fee (haha yeah right) but you never know. Then when toyota finally sends you a key you would have 3. To my knowledge the ecu should allow for 3 keys to be programmed to it. The valet key may get bumped but whatever, it only works in the door and tailgate anyhow. You may be able to find one on ebay for reasonable that is lightly used, again, I know not what you paid for with a new truck, but at least you could have a spare in the meantime.

 

If it's the same as mine, that second key you received will unlock the doors, glove box, lock/unlock the tailgate and start the truck.

 

Personally I would rather be in your shoes. You have a MT like me so you have an “H” key of which you got one, plus a key that does everything but open the door wirelessly (not a valet key). Additionally, you have a promise of another “H” key, so eventually you will have 2 “H” keys PLUS a fully functional 3rd key. I took delivery in December snd only got the 2 “H” keys, so I think you are doing better on the key issue than me.

I’m so glad I bumped into this thread! I bought my 2021 in February (actually December, but had to wait until February for it to be delivered, since I wanted MT) and only got one RKE and one of the plain keys and dealer said they couldn’t find the other and would mail me one. They never said anything about key shortage or showed me any flyer or notification label attached to the key. Thank you to those who have posted all that info here.

 

Picked up my 2021 off-road yesterday, was given two key fobs and a valet key.

 

Please clarify. Do you have a pushbutton ignition? What does the "valet key" actually do?

 

The “non-fob” keys are NOT valet keys. They just don’t have wireless entry/wireless locking. Otherwise they are fully functional, including unlocking the glove box. Just because a key does not have wireless capability does not make it a valet key.

 

My truck arrived yesterday. Picked it up today.
I received 2 "H" keys with keyless functions.
