I usually put 4 - 50lbs. bags of sand right above the rear axle. They’re about $5 a bag from Lowe’s. I figure that plus the tri fold cover is plenty. I don’t think it’s really necessary but it doesn’t hurt. Plus if I need traction cause I’m stuck on ice I have it. For $20 it’s cheap insurance.

The only extra weight I use is from snow that accumulated in the bed.

if your rear is sliding, let off the gas more?
at some point no amount of weight is going to keep you from sliding and when it does, the answer isn't to add another 200lbs.
Otherwise air down (remember that colder temps mean lower cold pressures) and when you do get stuck you'll be glad you didn't have all that extra weight to pull out.

Cat litter - at least two 50 lb bags - in the bed under the tonneau cover. Already packaged, adds weight, and I need it anyway for my cat. That is in addition to a Rubbermaid with tools and extras I keep in the bed under the tonneau cover.

In my unscientific testing, a little weight in the bed of my old full-size Chevy 10 years meant I could get in and out of my long ass driveway in deep snow, etc. without using 4WD and maybe a little benefit on bad roads.

With my two Tacos, I've never kept extra weight in long term beyond the OEM hard bed cover that's always there.

The big difference I've noticed with the Tacos has been in tires. I went from stock to Cooper AT3 on one and from stock to Wildpeaks on my current truck. Both were the difference in having to use 4WD or not to get in and out of our sometimes treacherous driveway.

I’ve put nothing in the bed. I guess I have about 50lb of tonneau cover weight, but that’s it. TRD ORSB. Lots of snow and ice here and have had 0 issues in 4wd. 2wd has been fine too, but I tend to err on the side of caution and flip it into 4hi if there is any snow or ice in my commute.

Currently in Bend, OR and it seems to be snowing once a week so far since Nov 1st.

I recently put 200lb directly over the rear axle and it made a good difference to the shitty OE wranglers. I can drive up my drive without 4wd (couldn't before) and it means I don't have to keep switching 4wd on/off all the time when out on semi clear roads.

Good tires would make all the difference but they will have to wait...

No weight at all ever for me in northern NH. Good tires, and good driving skills is all I need.

while those two things are factually correct, i don't understand the relevance to each other with respect to the rest of your post
