Usually three 60-70 lb bags of sand right over the rear axle. Have never had a problem driving on/through 1-8" of snow in Kansas. I can definitely feel the difference with the sand tubes in place.

Weight distribution makes a significant difference in handling in the snow. I don't know the magic number but 60/40, front to rear sounds about right.

Between my canopy and tool box, I've got 200-300 lbs over stock weight in back. I keep it the same all year so no change for winter.

Agree, the added weight in back is indeed noticeable. If you live rural, driving conditions vary considerably from urban.

Walked away unscathed. Little bump on the noggin that’s about it. Was definitely lucky.

You are a very fortunate person. Glad that you fared so well in a serious wreck.

    A few minor things...
It's only a smart move if you couldn't have made more money elsewhere with the money you spent. Like, If you could have gotten a .99%-1.99%APR on a loan I would have financed it and invested the rest of the money carefully for a slightly greater return. If not, then you made the right choice paying off debt early.

None need with stock tires and limited in 4 high. If the snow is deep enough to high center the truck you are screwed weight or not.

120lb (two tube sands from Lowes) lashed near the tailgate. The truck feels different even in the dry.

I know and it was my intention to take a bit of weight off the front wheels.

I paid for mine the same way, last October.
Look at it like this: you can pay yourself back, instead of paying somebody else back. Be disciplined.

Last Thursday I did my first snow ride in the Tacoma (2018 SR5) 5-6 inches of wet heavy snow. 4WH no issues, I always keep it slow.
I was on a 3 lane highway, for about 14 miles. I passed about 3 people because they were obviously not experienced, or overly, overly cautious. Last year in my 98 Park Avenue I would have stayed behind said people and took my time.

    No weight in the back.
