There is another thread where we are finding out how much each line on the gauge is really equal to in terms of gallons...

When you ask, 'How many Miles per Tank'... at what point do you get gas... obviously not when you run out, I hope?

Is it at the E line on the gauge... is it when the warning light comes on above the E line... is it when you reach the last quarter line???

Other Nomads and I are recording how many gallons go in when we reach certain points... providing we are near a gas station when the needle is firmly over that point.

So, if you are game... let's see if all Tacoma gauges read the same... As you can see below... when my gauge is down to 1/4 tank, I still have 7.7 gallons (1/4 of 21 being 5.25 means there is a 'reserve' of almost 2.5 gallons beyond the gauge reading. When on the E line, reports show we have that 2.5 to 3 gallons. The light comes on when we still have about 4 gallons.

Several fill ups when your gauge is RIGHT ON the E line will tell us if that seems to be pretty standard. No danger of running out on the E line, still (at least) 2.5 gallons in the tank then.

Miles (at 17 mpg) and Gallons per section of gauge reading:
    Full to 3/4 -------= 81.6 (4.8 gallons) [4.8 gal.=81.6 mi.]
    3/4 to 1/2------- = 78.2 (4.6 gallons) [9.4 gal.=159.8 mi.]
    1/2 to 1/4------- = 66.3 (3.9 gallons) [13.3 gal.=226.1 mi.]
    1/4 to E Line----- = 88.4 (5.2 gallons) [18.5 gal.=314.5 mi.]
    E Line to Empty-- = 42.5 (2.5 gallons) [21 gal.=357.0 mi.]
357 miles and 21 gallons total at 17 MPG.

Average @ 330 then I fill up. Don't usually wait for the light to come on, but it has to be close. I travel up from 4000' to 7500' above sea level daily in about 30 miles. IMO that isn't great for the MPG's...? Definately better if I leave eary and enjoy the ride.

On the contrary, you'll get better MPGs going uphill from 4000 ft to 7500 ft elevation than you will traveling on a flat surface at sea level. If I travel from home (4000 ft) up to Bodie State Park and spend a lot of my time driving up and over 8000 ft elevations, I get the best mileage (even going uphill but then I'm not carrying truck full of construction equipment). I usually average 22-23 mpg (and that was with BFG AT KO tires), although a lot of that speed is at/around 55-60 mph. If I travel all downhill to sea level and then drive on the flats in the valley, I get worse mileage.

Thanks! That's what I was thinking...So for about 4 years now when I had 265/75-16 tires I was actually getting better gas mileage than I thought.

I don't think so... all 2005+ Tacomas have a 21 gallon tank. The E Light will come on when you are down 17 gallons... but you still have 4 more until you run out.

My 2001 Extra Cab held 20 gallons.
