I am curious how many miles you drove your 3rd Gen before deciding that something had to be done about the engine/transmission issue and installing a device or ECU flash to try and overcome the issue?

I am going from a 2011 2nd Gen to a 2018 3rd Gen. I thought the 2nd Gen was perfect and did not like the 3rd Gen as much, but in about 3 months I have driven more than 7,000 miles and it seems much better. Smoother shifting and shifting less often... If I had started looking at these options earlier I might have tried something, but not sure that I would at this point.

You should have a "10K+ and I didn't feel the need to modify the tune" option.

I waited about 1,200 miles. Bought the truck used, so she already had 28,000. I reset the ECU and gave it the 1,200 miles to learn my driving habits. It got a little better (or I got used to it) and then that is when I found Shift Sense Pro. Been running that since. Does not fix every annoyance, but truck is tolerable now. Still hoping Toyota fixes their catastrophe of a trans tune

I made it 15k miles - and it was the most bi-polar I've ever felt owning any vehicle, ever. If tunes and other mods (such as SSP) were available I would have bought them willingly within 2-3k miles of ownership when it became clear something was amiss... As it was, we were still in the "new" phase of the 3rd gens and performance / drivability mods weren't ready yet.

Option 2, but you've got one too many zeroes in "1,000"

Mine is not 100% perfect, but drives fine! I am happy with it. Had the rev 1 flash done by the dealer. That helped a lot, plus just driving it and me getting used to truck and it learning my habits as mentioned. I have not had an auto trans vehicle in since 2004, bought the taco in dec of 2016, it's a 2017MY. Just did a 1,200 mile road trip and now i am at 10,750 miles.

At 16K on our truck and its been on 32's for 6k miles now. Shifting does not bother me really, or at least not like some people but since lift/tires I have been thinking about trying out either OVT or the SSP

    Yeah.. not so fast lol.

To each their own, but the throttle on my '16 was just abysmal on the stock tune. Not justifying the purchase, just saying everyone's experience/expectations are different.

Yes, I am only driving in D without ECT. A lot of highway driving for me, but our highways are hillier than most. The 2nd gen never shifted once you were up to speed on these roads. The 3rd gen is running a few hundred rpm less in the same situation, but needing to shift more often on the hills.

This problem isn't unique to the Tacoma or Toyota. There are still some fun to drive vehicles, but the MPG regulations and emissions are killing everything.

My wife is driving a 2016 Lexus NX200t. Still pretty fun to drive.

Before getting the 2018 Tacoma I tried the 2018 BMW X3, Audi Q5, and MB GLC300. I would have picked the GLC300 if I went the SUV route. The BMW and Q5 were boring as can be being under powered and too many gears in the transmission. All are a higher price point than the Tacoma, but no better and not really my style.

I live in the country. lots of narrow, hilly country roads. I always use ECT and S mode unless I'm going over 60 on the highway. I don't hesitate to push down on the little pedal on the right. Have always gotten 18-20+ MPG. Cruise control whenever I can and it's appropriate.
