I’m turning this into an oil change thread. Change it once at 1-2k miles brand new and then change it every 4-5k for service life.
If you wait that long then you’ll be having a bunch of old oil left over with 20k in it still from prior oil changes. Not all the oil gets removed from an engine when doing a drain and fill.

I had a similar experience at the Toyota dealership when I went in for the first service interval a few years ago. Never went back, I use an independent shop now. The owner used to work at a Toyota dealership and was sick of how they treated customers so he opened his own shop.

And to answer the question….10K on my 3rd gen. Call me crazy but I did what the owner’s manual said. I figured Toyota probably knows what they’re talking about.

I have done them every 5K after that because I fall into the severe use category or whatever they call it.

I would challenge anyone on the forum to show me that they have had an oil related engine problem... due to recommended oil change intervals. I've seen vehicles that had no oil changes for 40K miles and when the plug was pulled the gunk wouldn't come out of the pan... transmission fluid was added to break it up... and after several oil changes with trans fluid the engine went on to live a normal life.

The biggest factor in engine life is how the vehicle is driven and used.

At this point, there are so many resources available to end users, I'm not going to argue against the manual. I will point to all the mechanics that call out how 10k oil changes are terrible for long term usage. That while the manual says lifetime for transmission fluid, maybe you'd be better served changing it at major intervals. Same goes for radiator fluid, it may last 100,000+ miles... but there's evidence that eventually it gets so acidic that it starts eating through the seals on the head gasket... is it really that big of a task to maybe change the fluid every 60k miles to prevent corrosion causing a much more significant failure?

Are these the same mechanics that curse the new trucks that come out. Calling them "plastic" and "sure to age out" faster... and now they drive them because their former trucks lasted less time and they've come to respect the newer trucks? I've worked at three dealerships and without fail the mechanics recommend frequent oil changes... but never do oil changes frequently on their own vehicles. In fact I've seen mechanics (they like to be called "techs" now) that drained high dollar synthetic oil from low milage, frequent oil change vehicles... and used that oil in their own vehicles.

@Travlr Nope, not those mechanics shitting on the new platform. Like I mentioned, I'm not going to argue with anyone over the frequency in the manual, I'm just going to tell you that I'm cutting those numbers in half for my truck.

    I wouldn't consider it an argument unless you're a lawyer...lol!

My previous vehicle (2003 Honda Pilot EX) would get 3K mile oil changes...can't remember what the manual said but it's what I saw on commercials in the 80s.

Before I started using synthetic oil, I could see the difference in viscosity breakdown...the oil was darker!

Nowadays, the synthetic oils are thinner and brighter than those previous oils I used.

Changing the oil at 5K on my Sport, I can see a difference in color...but, it's not as dark...but still, dark.

I just got mine, 285 miles in. I think i am going to do it at 1k and then every 5 to 6k for my ownership. I have done the 10k oil changes in the wifes 2013 rav4, 128500 miles no issues to date. But it's a non turbo and was half the price. I'll also change the oil myself, f toyota care.

I'm old school plus have seen too many oil analysis's on new late model engines with 100% synthetic oils and the break-in contaminates are still there in these new engines. I would rather that junk not to keep circulating through the engine. Dealer lets me do it early under the first 2 free oil changes too.

Will do first around 2,000 and then what Toyota recommends after that. For me it will really be more of an annual thing for I don't drive my truck that many miles per year these days.

I did mine the other day at 4,000. Boy, howdy, did I miss the bucket! I felt like Capitan Hazelwood with the Exon Valdez. (There may be some kids here that don't know about that oil spill.)

I installed a Fumoto drain valve and have the tube for the next oil change. It should be mess-less.

Hey dude, would you mind sharing your analysis? Wondering about this topic, and if I should do an early change. Your sample results would be good info to have.

My trailhunter asked for it at 5045 miles. I did it at 4890, before my next trip. I suspect with all the towing I do, the maintenance minder is going to go off about every 5K.
