How many miles on your clutch before replacement?

    Well, I'm on a truck I gently use, no hauling much and mine is going out pre-mature at 264K, I say this because - I've been use to my other TACO's getting about 380K and replaced the clutch because it was thin and because I had almost always to go in because of the bearings. I've got over 5 million miles experience, and it usually follows Alternator at about 240K, Starter about 270K and Bearings in clutch at about 360-380K every time. Those previous trucks I worked them very hard and hauled a lot of things having to replace my front end sway bar with shocks etc. This truck I have now, the alternator went out exactly like the others at 240K, I'm not sure if I will have the starter go out at 270 on this one because I do not stop and start 50-100 times a day any more, only a few to a dozen times... but it shocked me to have my clutch loose all it's pressure today, and barely travels, it's almost like I can't feel it. I've had one truck built in 1979 that I had a million miles on replaced clutch twice (both times the clutch over bearings first) and I raced that truck and hauled often overloaded often - I got in the high 400K on those clutches and the clutch went out for the third time and I just sold it because I was tired of looking at her.

    THAT SAID, I have known a lot of people who either get 60-100K out of their clutches because they don't know how to use them, or get 250-300 on the low side and 350-380K on the high side. I always thought that if someone could not get 300K out of a clutch they lacked knowledge on using one... I guess every automobile has it's weaknesses regardless of user.

    I've got over 150K on mine with no issues, except for the taco chirp. I've done lots of towing, and off-road stuff.

    380K on a clutch? Must not be a 2nd gen. My first gen had 231,000 on it and still tight, that was before the frame cracked in half. My 2 2nd gen tacomas have the worst clutch I have ever driven. Im at 125,000 now and considering my options!

    Dealer just recommended new clutch at 67k. Took it in to confirm throw out bearing noise. My first Taco (‘15 TRDOR) is the bearing noise normal?

    For reference my 05 made the bearing noise from around 60k mi till I replaced the original clutch at 280k mi. When I replaced the clutch the throw out bearing was still functional and I still had lots of friction material left. My problem was the friction plate springs broke.

    I replaced my clutch on my 04 because the throwout bearing was chirping, but the clutch itself had plenty of life left. Only time I've had to replace a clutch on a vehicle because it went bad was on my Scion tC back in the day, had about 95k on it. It was my first manual trans car though so it had a rough start to life, lol.

    I've seen and heard of Tacomas getting upwards of 150k or more on the stock clutch. If you offroad a lot especially on rocks and such, or do a lot of towing, you'll probably be lucky to see anywhere near that.

    I'm at 120K. I've smoked it numerous times where there was actually smoke coming out from under the truck. Total user error in all cases - should've been in 4 low instead of 4 high. I used to tow heavy loads a lot, not as much these days. I use 2 wheel drive low when backing up the trailer, since installing it. The 2 Low mod from @Up2NoGood is one of my favorites. It's a real clutch saver.

    156k on my 2nd gen and the clutch is still holding strong. 2 of the last 3 owners did not baby the truck but as far as I can tell there's no signs of it letting go. No noise, no smoke, no slipping.

    My fathers 2nd gen has similar mileage and that one is nowhere near needing to be replaced. His 1st gen had 190k when he traded it in on the original clutch.

    Its all a matter of how you drive. I have friends who grenaded their clutches at 50k. On the other hand my stepmom had over 300k on her civic with the original clutch and my previous car, a VW Passat had 205k on the clutch when other things went wrong and put the car out of commission.

    Thank you. Makes me feel a lot better knowing the noise doesn’t necessarily mean it’s time to replace. I’m used to my old Dodge Ram- if it made a noise, something had already fallen apart.

    My original clutch lasted 220,000 miles. Would have gone further, but replaced the 5-speed transmission at 220K, and since it was all right there just decided to do everything in one swoop.

    60K miles.

    Three weeks after I had the throwout bearing replaced under warranty, one of the springs in the clutch disc popped out and wedged itself in between the clutch and the pressure plate so I couldn't disengage the clutch. Dealer swore it had nothing to do with the work they did but I argued it was one hell of a coincidence that it happened three weeks later.

    I had a similar story. Factory clutch was right near the very top of the pedal travel and was super tight. Put in a new clutch at 175k and it was a dream for a couple thousand miles now it's right back where it was before. High and tight. Kind of annoying but I don't know what to do about it.

    Also my throwout bearing squeaks now too despite having greased it up during install. In other cars I've had some success shooting 30 weight oil from an oil can (the kind with spout and trigger that can shoot like a 10 foot stream if you really squeeze it) through the clutch fork hole onto the bearing to shut it up for awhile, we'll see if that works on the Taco. Maybe 90W will last longer, idk.

    127,000 on my original clutch and she is doing just fine.
    I taught my girlfriend how to drive a stick with it so.....129K was my number; my clutch just went out.

    LEER Shell with dome lights operated with 3 way switches, aux backup lights with relay and 3 position switch, modified wiring to compass/temp display and clock to include switch that disables dimming function (poor man's DRL solution), Scan Gauge 2
    My original clutch was replaced around 50K due to chirping throwout bearing. Otherwise it all looked perfect. I do wonder what would have happened if I had just ignored it, but Toyota paid for it, so why not.

    8 years and 45K later (don't drive much), I had to have it replaced again because it was not wanting to fully release when cold. Again, visually it all looked great. A shame, but I don't think mechanical things are supposed to sit as much as this truck does.
