How many miles would you pay for?

I've determined what I want in a truck (05+, AC or DC, 4x4) and now I'm tryin to find somethin in my price range (~$14,000 or less). I may be able to scrounge a little more than that but not barely as I'm a college student and can only really make cash over the summer...

I've been looking for months now and except for the rare few exceptions I can never find "my truck" in my price range unless the miles are relatively high (150k or more). As a long time Toyota fan from a family that's owned them for years I know they can last forever into the upper 300's and beyond but I'm not sure about buying one with lots of miles.

This question has been milling in my head for a long time but is now extra strong considering I found a truck: 05, AC, 166K and they only want $11,900! So good buy or too many miles?

I know it's all opinion based but throw em out there!

Not what you want to hear, but wait until you graduate and have a career. Is it really that big of a need right now?

Edit: I guess it is that big a need, you bumped in 5 minutes.

Nota HUGE need but I know that I'll have a reasonable amount of moving to do in the next year or more (mostly this coming summer, twice, the following winter, at least once and probably more) and most of my stuff is big so filling it into a corolla isn't really an option and making tons of trips is ridiculous..

Plus ill admit to the fact that I do want a truck/new car soon.... Been drivin this beat pos corolla sense I could 7 years ago and I'm more than tired of it.

    1. Had to rebuild the engine two years back when it randomly and for no reason that we could find blew up (there was coolant in cylinder one but. Never found a broken gasket or any type of crack).

    2. Almost all of the door handles have or are currently broken. Wile I know they can be fixed as I have done so multiple times on each; they not cheap at all and have continued to break... Talk about annoying having only one almost completely openable door on a 4 door car

    3. Even tho the rebuild was done correctly, 1. it was my first time and 2. You don't get it back to 100% after something like that and so it has a strange low idle and that kills the city mileage.

I'd say it depends on the full condition of the truck OP as to whether or not it's worth the coin. That's well above average mileage/year so I'm going to assume the PO did a lot of highway running. When I was shopping a couple years ago, one thing I did find out in a hurry about used Tacos is that they don't stay on the market for long. Once you find one you want--make a move on it.

    I just paid $9K for a 2007 - although RWD only.

Harrisonburg eh? I used to have a little farm right outside of Elkton. One hill over from Hensley Hollow. Bought a nice short barrel .38 there at the Big Bear Market one time. <g>

    Small world huh?

Buy a 1st gen if anything. Would be a little cheaper and still be pretty fun. Also you don't really need 4x4 as a college student if money is that big of an issue...

Bobbb: it is above average but the trucks for sale in th Dc/metro area so I'd also have to assume a lot of highway and commuting miles... And I know what you mean about how they move quick, had one picked out a while back and it was gone in a week!

Poodle: if you don't mind how many miles when you bought it? (I've got a rough estimate of what 4x4 adds to the price usually. And ya it is! I didn't grow up there, my parents moved from the cville area to there during my freshman year in college

Redfox1: I've thought about 1st gens but I really want the 05+ for the newer body style and idk... Tons of reasons. Also, while money is an "issue" it's really more saving enough in my time frame. As I said when I starred the thread I want the truck before I graduate so I can have it to move stuff, also because I want to have my current car sold before I have to think about moving and career and all of the real world problems to come. I know 4x4 is more expensive on gas and maintence but as someone who likes to explore the country side and the trails plus camp a little, I want the ability even if I don't use it everyday or even every weekend.

The one I just bought was a standard cab - 109K miles on it. I like the way the std cab looks better. More truck-like. <g>
