I was told that the Pitch is basically a Rockhopper that's not a 29er.

Check out the Salsa and Niner bikes.

I used to live in Burleson and rode Cleburne SP a lot. You ride there and Dinosaur Valley?

I don't ride. This will be my first bike. I haven't ridden a mountain bike in 10 or 12 years since I borrowed my cousin's extra bike with no brakes and wrapped it around a tree at Cleburne SP. I'm moving to Mansfield on Saturday and am looking to start riding again since I'll be closer to some of the Dallas area trails and such.

From what I've seen of Salsa and Niner, both of those are out of my price range. I'm really not looking to spend much more than about $750. That's why I'm looking at Specialized.

I've only ridden bmx bikes as a kid, and beach cruisers. But there's some trails by my house and it looks like a lot of fun, so I pulled the trigger on a DB line the other day. My first Mountain bike. Super stoked to get started

Just some advise... spend the money on hydraulic brakes and decent shifting/rear derailer. This will be the biggest part of keeping you happy on the trails.

All the bikes I'm looking at have hydraulic brakes.

I was actually looking at the Rockhopper Sport 29. Think the Comp is really worth the extra $225?

To me yes it is worth that and more. The air fork will be much more responsive then the coil while saving weight. The x5 shifter/derailed is also much better. The upgraded components will help with the performance of the bike. These things go on sale often too so check your local stores for deals. Remember the important thing isn't what brand the bike is. It is what components it has. Do your research. Check out mtbr.com

If you are paying $750 for a retail $750 bike then you are getting screwed. There are always sales or last year models for20-30-40% off. My Salsa El Mariachi retails for $2700 and I got it for $1500 with upgrades

There's not a whole lot of options for bike shops around me. And everywhere I've been, bikes have been pretty much all prices the same as the next place.

Sun and ski 30 mins north of you is also having a nice sale. Great bikes for a good price. Don't be stuck on a big brand like specialized, trek, giant.
