I'm sort of curious about this. Mine was totally silent until I changed them (w/ new OEM pads) and now I have it. I have taken them out a few times and added more caliper grease around the edges but it always comes back eventually. It's not really a "problem", just annoying to me.

It'd be interesting to see if there's a trend based on the specific pads we're using.

What pads do you use and do you/don't you have this occurring?

    So to start:

    Toyota OEM; Yes

Define " Brake Pad Slap ". I don't know what that is.

Did you replace the rotors or have them machined? If you just replace the pads alone it can cause noises. Also, did you make sure all brake pad shims are properly in place?

My 08 had it and new brake pads solved the issue. It's an annoying trait of this brake design, but it's harmless. So far my 14 has not developed the issue, but I only have 7000 miles.

My '12 has it, even with the second spring installed. It's more subtle since adding the spring.

A "clunk" when starting or stopping just after applying or letting off the brakes. Caused because the pads"float" within the caliper and will knock on either side.

Brand new Toyota OEM rotors and yes, the shims are there. I do agree with you on not just replacing pads. I've always done rotors at the same time whenever I've done brakes on any vehicle.

Second spring? I've only got one on each side of my '11.

My 12 does it too. I replace both springs I purchased from Napa, it quieted it down very little but still have it. Just annoying when reversing then going forward again after braking.

Mine is doing it too, needs nee pads, I'm hoping it'll go away after replacing them. Haven't decided what brand I'll go with.

I had it until I put on new brake pads and rotors. Went with duralast gold replacements. Installed them around 10,000 miles ago, no complaints.

Mine still clicks . Just swapped out the winter tires for the summer rubber and added the second spring on each side . Took the caliper pins out and lubed them up . You could see signs of wear on the caliper pins and where the brake pads meet the caliper housing . My pads were still in great shape as far as pad thickness . Too bad they are worn out where the metal brake pad meets the caliper . It wasnt worth replacing the pads and rotors yet .Gonna live with the " clunk or clack " until the lining on the pads is wore out. I may be one of the few fellas that are out of the ordinary , but I use my ebrake every day and I have an auto transmission . Using the ebrake keeps your rear shoes adjusted prolonging the life of your front brakes . You can read more about why I highly suggest using the e-brake here https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads...sions-write-up-your-4-speed-automatic.325531/
Here is the link to the brake click fix . In my opinion , the " Click Fix " will only work on low mileage brake pads .The problem with adding the second spring in the link , some guys are adding new pads with the spring , some guys are replacing the pads and adding the additional spring but not replacing the pins , some guys are lubing the calipers , some are not . Some guys are removing the pins and lubing them up , some are not , some are adding new disk quiet to the pads , some are not .Some guys are simply installing the spring without doing or looking at anything else . The end result is a mixed bag of yah it worked for me or is was a waste of my time pulling the tires off
    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/brake-click-fix.157684/

If you have high mileage on your brake pads but the brake lining still looks good , chances are the only way the noise is going to go away is if you replace the pads .
With this said , I havnt seen a detailed video of a fellow TW member,s truck showing the wear points on the brake pads in comparison to a brand new set of pads .
If you got a brake job planned , please do some videos or pics with arrows showing us where to look for the play .
It wouldnt take much once the truck is off the ground with the front tires off . Run it in 4x4 and go from forward to reverse a couple times while you record the movement with your camera

As long as the caliper works and durability is not affected, I don't care about the sound. Thinking about leaving out the anti-rattle clip the next time I replace my pads, too. Race calipers are built this way:

Yeah I went with duralast gold for pads and rotors. No complaints what so ever. Been quiet ever since

Guess I have the brake slap too. When I barely apply the breaks, I hear a clunk.

Before adding the second spring, mine was crazy loud. It sounded like something was badly broken and I'd get funny looks from across the parking lot or wherever.

Interesting. Not sure that I have this. But every now and then I hear a distinct "thud" under my front left wheel well. Considering how many rocks get stuck in my tire tread I always assumed it was a rock throwing loose. Only seems to happen when I make a turn from a stop sign. There are ALWAYS small rocks on the roads here in Montana - even in city limits.

Otherwise I don't recall ever hearing anything when braking.

Looks like I'm going to have to buy a couple more springs.

Mine is usually pretty tame when it does make noise, but sometimes it's a very big bang. Usually happens if I've been driving a while in hot weather where I've been braking a lot then back out of a parking spot or some other slow maneuver where I'm changing direction. I can only think that something somewhere expands in the heat and makes it worse.
