I got my 08 TRD OR at the beginning of summer and dealer said first 3 oil changes are free - from any dealer I want.

I like changing my own oil and used to it on all my vehicles. I like to know it’s done right.

Question for folks here - do you think I should take it in for the free ones or just do it myself? I don’t know what my local dealers are like, as far as trying to up sell me on other work, etc. (Nothing is needed on the truck BTW).

I used Castrol GTX for years. It's good oil. I switched to Mobil 1 in my wife's minivan and lately, I've been running Penzoil Platinum in my truck.
Like others have said, just use the right grade and keep it changed like you should. If you don't have new crush washers, just put some Teflon tape on the drain plug. I've been doing that for decades.

I did this last oil change, not from Walmart though .. came to like $17 for 5+1 quarts. Made the change to synthetic and upgraded filter...won't change oil until 7500miles down the road

I started using Pennzoil Platinum in my '14 Outback (uses oil but not badly) several years ago. I noticed that it slowed the oil consumption rate considerably, so now use it in all vehicles. Later discovered that it has a relatively lower NOACK value than other oils (i.e. volatilizes a little more slowly). Not advocating for it, just explaining why I use Pennzoil over others.

Well we are up to 50 posts and counting and not a single proven or scientific reason why any oil is better than any other oil. Mostly a lot of I use this oil and I use that oil but no reason why anyone else should use the oil the you use.
These oil threads are a kick. I certainly learn a lot about oil from them, not.
Has anyone out there ever experienced engine failure due to the brand of oil they use? I know that the answer is no and the reason is that all modern automotive oils are superb top notch lubricants . It is marketing and hearsay that lead people to use certain oils and think it is the best.
Ok let’s hear some more - I use........

Actually someone did post about why they use a certain oil and linked a PQUI study backing up his statement :boink:

I read the test results but I doubt anyone here knows what those results really mean or can translate those results to engine longevity. Or that anyone here can break down the results and state that your engine will run longer and trouble free on any one of the brands tested based on the results. Still waiting for a list of engines that have failed due to the “BRAND” of oil.

OP is asking who runs Pennzoil. He's not asking for anything that you're crying about that's missing from this thread. If you don't run Pennzoil, why are you even posting?

I stated my preference and provided a legit reason why, with emphasis on it being a preference. I didn't say "use this or your engine will fail", just provided testing results indicating a lower volatility than other brands, which I decided was good for my situation. And if folks can't understand the NOACK value based on simple units of measurement as shown on the linked test results sheet (% mass lost per hour at 250°C), then I think you're either underestimating the intelligence of folks here on TW, or the new focus on STEM education is sorely needed.

    OME and worth every penny.
It does give food for thought. I change out on the Sienna @ 5K miles because it's about 3/4 of a qt. low at that point.

If it were only 1/4 or even 1/2 low, I could stretch further. (or I may find that it's going out the tailpipe)

However the cost (Mobil 1 being 12 bux for 5 qts. vs. 26 or so for Penn) would make doing a 'backyard study' moot to gain 2500 miles.
Plus the whole reason for going syn, being that it's a 'sludge' design. The 3.4 is not.

I've been running penzoil platinum 5w-30 or sometimes penzoil ultra platinum in our corolla and tacoma. I buy two jugs from Walmart. Corolla takes 4.5qt, Taco takes 5.5. None left over, works out perfect.
The corolla was purchased with 23k miles and now has 147k. Consumes zero oil. Tacoma only has 36K on it so far so good. Toyota factory filters FTW.

I did lots of interwebz research on bobistheoilguy forum, these are highly regarded oils yet are pretty cheap.

2006-2018 I was 100% mobil1 then read test results, switched to Pennz platinum, noticible change in engine noises and smoothness, now 150% Pennz platinum fan!

(NOTE: for the sake of being precise, replaced Tacoma 5-VIN 1GR-FE with J-VIN 1GR-FE in 2017, J-VIN runs smoother, less extra noises, but both had extra ticks and clatters with mobil1, switched to Pennz on J-VIN and less noises)

    Edit...
if it matters, from day one, brand new, I change oil every 3,000 miles and use OEM filters.

Also noticed mobil1 poor more like cooking corn oil, really thin as compared to Pennz. Both 5w30.
