Some believe Pennzoil and Quaker State were "trash oil" back in the 80s. Based on what I viewed after pulling the valve covers off of a 1980 Dodge Diplomat in the mid 80s, I might be inclined to agree. Heads were full of what looked like wet sand. The car had been serviced every 4K at a Firestone Dealer. They used 10W-40 conventional and a Pennzoil oil filter - likely a rebranded Fram.

But here we are 30+ years later.

Does anyone believe either of the aforementioned brands would still exist if they were gunking up engines?

As I said I have had over a dozen favorite oils over the years. Originally many years ago I used Pennzoil. I used it cause I “heard” good things about it and I liked the looks of it, it just looked so clean and pure. Later I switched to something not even made any longer, Arco Graphite. It was black as coal and I felt uneasy putting it in my engine as it looked like old very used and dirty crank case oil. But the graphite was suppose to make it the most slippery oil out there. It was definitely marking that got me using that. Then I went back to Pennz. Then I switched to Chevron Supreme oil (I worked pt. Time in a full service Chevron station back then). Then I changed to Castro. After a while I went to Mobile One. Changed to several different oils after that. Every one I used I’d swear was the best there was until the next one. Always based on marketing and what other people said. I finally came to the conclusion that unless you use it for special applications like racing , oil is oil. Ain’t going to affect your vehicle performance one bit no matter what brand you use as long as you change oil and filter at recommend intervals or sooner.

I started buying Pennzoil in 1973 when I began driving. Since, I've logged thousands upon thousands of miles, on 18 different 4wd's, and 42 cars/2wd's. 4 were diesel's. Some went into the 350,000/400,000 mile range.

Never had an internal engine issue. Tore down a couple when doing higher performance builds. Never saw any sludge...no unusual wear....Never a reason to question my brand loyalty. Still use it. 100%.

I have no doubt there's a dozen other brands that will do as well. I see no reason to believe anything else will do better.

'Sweet Crude' is paraffin, 'sour crude' is sulfur. 'intermediate' is a mix.

    They boil off both.

The old oils that were sour based were more corrosive.

I don't use 5W-30, I don't believe the Toyotas rec.s for that so who knows how many more LIES they're telling me.

I think TW should just start an oil forum then all this useful information will be in one place. Perhaps “useful” is not the pronoun I should use.
I meant to type adjective not pronoun and I was being facetious when I said useful.

Oh jeez it would just be littered with opinion threads. BITOG has inciteful threads and I still don’t really even consider that useful, and they have people that post scientific data lol.

I assume you were referring to my post about using a lower volatility oil like Pennzoil Platinum. We use our Outback very intermittently. It sits in the garage for weeks at a time, and my OCI are based on time rather than mileage because of the low overall mileage we put on it. When we do use it, however, it is usually for a longer runs, like 500+ miles over multiple consecutive days (like visiting our families several states away, or camping or kayaking in far away places). I like using Pennzoil because it uses way less oil (due to lower volatility, or NOACK value) and I no longer have to add oil in the middle of the trip like I did using M1 and Valvoline full synthetic. So, in short, it's not to save money but rather out of convenience. I hope this clears things up a bit.

As an aside, I want to emphasize that I have a unique situation (along with some other Subaru owners). The oil consumption issue is well known and Subaru has extended the warranty to 100,000 miles to address it. I've had two of their oil consumption tests done and it is well below the threshold that would prompt them to replace the short block.

The overall message should be to use whatever oil suits you for whatever reason you deem important, as long as it meets the manufacturers API Service requirements.

I remember using that stuff, too! It was in the typical cardboard can with a metal top. Late 70's maybe?

We are really dating ourselves by admitting that.

I made the switch my last change. As soon as I did, a bald eagle flew out of the cab of my truck, did a barrel roll and landed on my shoulder. Two Raptor F-22's did a fly over, and the national anthem started to play. I took it as a sign that I had done the right thing for my truck.

Call me old school or whatever you wish, but extended oil changes have minimal financial benefit. I purchase the good extended synthetic oil, but still change at 3,000 miles. I trust Penn Plat. now more than Mobil1, but I trust NO oil to go more than 5,000 miles! You never know, could be a bad batch, a sensor not working correctly, something causing extra heat on the fragile heads and piston rings, on older 1GR-FE's the pads on the Cam tensioners and slippers tend to ware putting tiny plastic fragments in the oil, etc... If you don't change the oil often and examine it, how do you really know what's going on in your engine??? How much do you really care or depend on your truck? I don't work emergency response anymore, it's been, gosh, at least 6 yrs, back then my Tacoma was my lifeline, lifeline for others too! Now, my Tacoma is just my 'baby' and my pride n joy toy. She did me good when I was in critical situations, I return the favor. What you call a "Waste of time, money and resouces" ... Even if it is... Which it's not, to date I've got somewhere around $100,000 invested in this truck. Honestly, if I wasted $1,000 (exadurated of course, in actuality changing the oil with Pennz Plat and OEM filter literally costs me about $35-$40, with it lifted and not having to crawl around under it, literally takes 15mins to do) a year changing the oil every other day or whatever for peace of mind and protecting my investment, at this point it really doesn't matter to me. Even $1,000 extra a year compared to what I spend anyway wouldn't make a whole lot of difference. Spending an extra MAYBE $100, MAYBE EVEN $200 on oil and filters a year to protect my investment... and more importantly protect YOUR investment should be a no brained??? Do you think the savings is worth the risk????

let's say you drive 20,000 miles a year, change the oil every 5,000 miles with Pennz Plat. and OEM filter at a cost of at MOST $45. You spend $180 a year on oil/filters. Now, if you change your oil every 3,000 miles, that's roughly 7 times in that same year. So, WORST case scenario, you save $45x3= $135 a year. That's ( I'm not breaking out a calculator for this) a savings of less than $15 a month, $0.50 a day. I spend 4x that a month strictly on cleaning products and shiat a month keeper her clean! So an extra few dollars to make sure the engine is in tip top shape... Maybe some people really just don't care that much. Maybe it's just me.

I'll send some Pennz to Blackstone to do some comparisons.

Blackstone says I can go 12,500 miles between changes. I'll go with their scientific research.
