    Chevron Supreme 5/30 @ $12.50 a gallon from Walmart

In extreme cold winters switch to Mobil 1, Valvoline or Castrol Synthetic , whichever one is on sale

    Wix oil filters

Not an oil scientist here, but changing the oil/filter often is what I was told to do by old timers 40 or so years ago.

    Seems to work OK.

You don't have high mileage in a Tacoma. Keep what you have been using

We can shower once a week and stay alive too.

These "scientific" studies make me wonder at times. It is so cheap to change oil/filter, why drive 12K miles. Even at 3K miles my oil is dark (even the synthetics) , so it is dirty. Does it still protect the engine? maybe so. But it is dirty, so i change it.

my skin is dark, does that make me dirty? ok, I am a dirty old man but that's not the point.

any moron changing oil at 3k that does not tow, deserves an empty wallet

Yeah but the oil companies and auto parts stores tell me to change my oil every 3,000 miles. They are just looking out for me!

Also, everyone who does extended oil changes, 1GR-FE's are notorious for the fuel injectors on cyl 5 and/or cyl 6 sticky/leaking. The fuel system is pressurized, Which means, if your injector is leaking or sticking, when you shut your truck off and go to bed, the fuel is leaking into the cylinder, past the rings into the oil pan. Fuel in your oil thins the oil and breaks down viscosity. If you do extended oil changes smell your oil when you drain it. If it HAS A STRONG GAS smell start doing normal 3000 mile oil changes. If your in doubt, if your oil smells like a gas can, pull the lower oil pan, get a flashlight, look at the cylinder walls of cyl 5 and cyl 6 you will see a reddish drip streak. Or, if your truck has been parked for days, pull plugs on 5 and 6, put an endoscope in the hole, you will see moisture or even a puddle of fuel around the outer edges of the head. But who really cares... right? It's just your truck.

Or just get a UOA and see what’s really in your oil without guessing and ripping shit apart.

    Couple thoughts here.
    1. Yes, i've used pennzoil syn, its fine. I usually run mobil syn. I can usually find that on sale at wally. If not, valvoline or pennzoil is on sale. every 5,000
    2. Yes, this is another oil thread, and people dont have to respond. I recently got a new motorcycle and on that forum they have one big oil thread where all related oil questions are moved to, and although i get the premise it sucks. If you have specific oil related questions they get lost in the white wash of what is a 2000 page thread, so be thankful it doesnt happen here. Many people forget that many new members have never lifted a wrench. You were there too. me, i grew up with a mechanic dad and engineer father in law, i was lucky

A local store here had Chevron Supreme on sale for $6.50 per 5qt jug. I bought a bunch so I'll be running that for years. In the past I have ran Supertech, Havoline, Valvoline and pretty much every other brand and they all work the same when you change between 3 & 5k miles. Only time I notice a difference is when it comes to what oil I put in my manual transmissions and after trying a bunch I have found Redline to be superior.

since original question was about running Pennzoil..

I run the 5W30 platinum ultra (when it goes on sale at canadian tire) ultra along with OEM toyota filter. And i go with toyota's 5000 mile change intervals.

why i like it .. A true synthetic rather than hydrocracked and the UOA's on bobs the oil guy site have been very good
And no matter what the brand I prefer synthetic due to low temperature flow properties for Canadian winters.

since i have always done my own oil changes this cost is equal of even less than what it would cost generally to have it done for me with regular oil.

    Now as to this question

"do you change a condom after 30 seconds because you are afraid of it bursting in the middle of the act?"

Of course not but i do use a synthetic lubricant :bananadance:
