How many of you traded in/sold your Tacoma only to end up back in one?

I've had three Tacomas ('04, '14, '20) a 4Runner ('16), a GTI ('16), a Raptor ('18), two Tundras ('07, '16), two Jeeps ('04, '19), an LR2 ('07, I think), a Lexus ('18) and I'm sure several others I'm forgetting as my daily drivers. I love the Tundras and the Tacomas and always go back to one of those (if I need to tow I get a Tundra, if I don't then I get a Tacoma). I rarely keep vehicles longer than a couple years (usually around 18 months) but the Toyotas tend to stick around just a bit longer.

 

I wanted to try the diesel hype and traded in my 2017 white TRD off road Tacoma for a 2018 diesel ZR2 Chevy Colorado. Hated it! Emissions failure, DPF failures, fuel filter issues, etc. Ditched it and returned back the trusty 2019 Tacoma TRD off road. Zero issues.
I don’t understand the hype of people wanting a diesel in the Tacoma stateside. Yes overseas, the Hilux diesel is probably pretty epic but the EPA here in the states will make sure to destroy any diesels Toyota tries here. Hence the reason Toyota won’t do it here because they know it would be an epic failure.

 

Started as a Jeep guy, first Toyota was an 05 DCLD. Traded the 05 for an 06 Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon (best Jeep ever IMO), totaled it and bought an 09 DCSB, traded that for an 08 LC, traded that for an 16 DCSB (wasn’t crazy about this truck), then 18 Tundra, now back to a 20 DCSB.

 

Not attempting to sound like a fanboy, but what other vehicle out there exists with the reliability reputation, resale, ability to go anywhere, ability to have fun and has a fair amount of storage with an open bed all for $28k-40k?

 

Anything you found noteworthy between the 16 and 20 that you like better?

The 16 was an OR, the 20 is a Pro, so it may not be a fair comparison, but I think the 20 has several improvements over the 16. Seat, tech, transmission.

no it’s a great truck, but you do sound like a fanboy haha. I’m just saying the truck doesn’t do Everything. No car does. It would be impossible to design a vehicle truly designed for everything. My truck has all the things you described, plus room for my bikes, camping gear, people, etc... it’s perfect for what I need it for. I love it, that’s why I have one.

 

@calebc I'm curious... how did you like the Raptor? I'm really considering trading in my Taco for a new 2019 Raptor near me... the dealership has it reduced $7800 below MSRP.

 

They’re piles of garbage. I wouldn’t drive another (current gen) if it was given to me. I had mine for about 18 months and had it in to the dealer for various issues 9 times. Multiple times for the crappy transmission, which they acknowledged wasn’t right but could never fix it.

Same here for trying a diesel vehicle. Back in 85 i did work for a peugeot dealer...said if i need a car he'd give me his a great deal on one so i took him up on a 505 sedan that year. That diesel power car was the noisiest pos of a vehicle i've ever wished i never owned. Nothing but cooling, electrical, and leaking oil issues, not to mention you'd stink of diesel fumes every time you drove in it. After 2 years of it went back to toyota cars to keep the wife happy.

 

Sold my new 2008 2nd Gen AC 4WD after about 18 months. Too many little things bothered me: Transmission (auto) always skipped a beat when stopping (felt like I was tapped from the rear). No heated mirrors, 4.0 had horrible fuel mileage and was fairly gutless. Would downshift on the slightest incline (not hill, but incline) on the interstate. Bought a F150 which solved all those issues, had a V-8 and better gas mileage.

Kept the F150 until the body started to go (bought it used) and rust started taking over. Decided to give the Toyota another chance since it had been over a decade since my last new one. Bought a new 2019. It was cheap, still gutless, still crappy mileage, but has heated mirrors. Will off it in another year and get a domestic full size to put a camper on.

Why Toyota? For me it was reliability and resale. I know what I was getting into but was a bit surprised how little the truck had changed in a decade.

 

I had a 2005 TRD OR, which I bought through a buddy who deals cars. I paid $10k for it...drove it for 2 years with only oil changes & a set of new tires...& sold if for $12k!
I wanted something more fun to drive! So, next was a 2009 BMW 328 wagon. This car (to me) is epic!!! As I've stated before, I love wagons; and this is a RWD, naturally aspirated, manual, wagon! Check, check, check, check! Sadly, the constant maintenance eventually wore me down (even with relatively low expectations going in...I mean, I knew it was a bimmer & was willing to put up with a lot!). After 3 years, I got tired of spending too many weekends in the garage, so here I sit with a 2017 TRD OR!
I still have the BMW (it's for sale) & still love to drive it! But for overall EVERYTHING you can't beat a Taco!
*I reserve the right to (again) get tired of daily'ing a truck, & may want something more fun...don't fault me for my cycle of vehicles!

 

Had an 82 SR5 4X4, great truck. Traded in for a New 1989 Chevy Duelly extra cab, it was mainly for carrieing a Fleetwood Caribou cab over camper for a few years.
Moved on to a S-10, a Jeep Wrangler and have always needed a truck. Started looking for a used affordable truck. Looked primarly at 1st gen Tacomas. Finely found one that was well maintained except for the sheet metal. Small dent in every corner and the left rear door. A cracked windshield, but otherwise a well taken care of truck. Its a 2002, 4 door, had 173,000 miles on it and came with a Vista shell. Bought it for $7500.
Getting very close to hitting the 200,000 mile mark soon.
Runs great, but has the typical rear leafspring issue and why I ended up on TW.

 

Been there, in my quest for a fun car I've gone from a Turbo Porsche to a Jeep Wrangler. At this time the Tacoma has them covered.

 

Surprised you didn't consider a tundra, and more surprised the f 150 got better gas mileage for a v8. I had a 4.7 v8 tundra...loved the every bit of the truck except the fuel economy.

 

I second everything that was just stated!! I had a 2018 Raptor loaded up with 802A package and sold it in 6 months due to multiple issues (cam phaser, trans issues, constantly leaking pano roof, and left me stranded on the side of the road twice). Tough pill to swallow spending $75k on a truck and not trusting it to go on a road trip.

 

Oh, I considered a Tundra....Loved the Tundra! The power, the sound, the looks. Loved it!

My wallet didn't like it at all :-(

BUT!!! Local dealer has a Crew Limited in Calvary Blue that has been sitting on his lot for about 4 months now....you got me thinking ;-)

Honestly though, the domestic I'm thinking of (and have an order on) is AWD, made of stainless steel, can tow 14,000 lbs and is quicker than my 911 Turbo was ;-)
