When I changed wheel and tire size, I matched the spare as well. I just bought a cheaper steel wheel for the spare since it lives under the truck.

I have 285's with a 255 spare. Didn't have a spare for a while, waited until i could find a cheap one in my area. Ended up getting one for free from another TW member!

After reading that other thread, I am convinced that he is fucking with everyone. Although I don't necessarily agree with what he said there, he at least said it much more intelligently.

That would be fine to me. Close enough in size and will be able to get you out of the trouble that caused the flat. Probably not a bad idea as it would leave a little more clearance than a 285. After adding my bumper, it looks like the spare is what will hit first now in the rear and I have 255s. Not a ton of difference, but I don't want to drag my spare sidewalls over things more than I have to.

Those were my initial thoughts as well, I wanted to mount it on the steelie that the stock spare came on and wanted the 255 to avoid potential rubbing issues (because I have no idea what the Bs and offset specs for that wheel are), also initially wanted to put it in the stock spare location and wanted something skinny and low profile, not sticking down too low. Although now i've decided to just leave it in the bed and not mount it underneath. The 255 that I got is pretty much the exact diameter as my 285's because its the same tire (st maxx) just with less tread

Full size always... NOT NEEDED... BUT... you can continue having fun or enjoying your day if you swap out an exact match of what you had on your rig. You don't run around feeling like an asshat because your ghetto (relax, those of you who may be offended... I grew up in a shit hole ghetto-ish areas... yes qualified as having moved multiple times too) ass decided to run an undersized donut on your 4x4 Tacoma.

I would run the Pro's and Con's exercise.

Pros - Secuirty, Confidence, Reliablity . (***security in knowing it works as expected and I can continue my day, weekend, adventure, etc.)

Cons - $$$ (>33" mods needed to fit under bed or relocation)

I think it really boils down to what you want to do. My wife's car does not have a spare but we have AAA and she has run flats. All of my rigs have a full size spare and wheel to match. I like the peace of mind knowing I do not have to play musical wheels to make my spare work or stop my trip and limp home figuring out where I can or if I can fix my flat... just my $.02

If you are trying to calculate an ROI... how much is time worth to you? What is the cost of a full size matching spare wheel and tire? Before you haters gonna hate... YOU ARE CORRECT... NOT NEEDED... but we all use our microwaves, mobile phones, hot water, floss (well not everyone), don't we?

I purchased a spare ST MAXX 255/85r16 when I bought my set. I've yet to put it on my spare wheel though. Not sure how I want to transport it. Ideally I'd like a bed rack/inset cargo basket kinda deal but I haven't found one I love.

You can fit a 33" spare under the bed in the stock location, at least you should be able to. Might require trimming the ends off of the bracket that holds the spare in place but a lot of people on here get them to fit.

I just keep mine in my bed but it does take up a lot of space.

As eon_blue says, it'll fit under the truck. You can also relocate the spare mount bracket a skosh for even more clearance.

I'm considering going this route. My four wheels in use are 17", while my spare wheel is 16". If the spare tire diameter is the same as the others, I'm assuming no real issues...?

Edit- Perhaps it's worth mentioning that aftermarket wheels might use different lug nuts than factory wheels, so proper planning required regarding lug nuts and lug wrenches.

You will still be riding on a small diameter tire when you put the spare on. A little over and inch difference. But I wouldn't worry about it if it's just to get you to the tire shop or home. People drive on those silly little spares all the time.

Definitely. I prefer the bed route. Easier access in my opinion, and if I'm offroading or long-hauling then all my gear is in the cab because I don't have waterproof security in the bed. It's surprising just how much you can fit behind the seats in an access cab. The only issue I have with a bed mount is theft, or attempted theft and cut fasteners.

Found this in the manual for my 2019, it even states the spare may negatively affect the drive train components in 4WD system:

A temporary spare is different than a full-size spare. Are the new Tacomas no longer coming with full-size spares?

I fit a full size spare the other week (255/80/17). Had to hammer the two brackets flat and it fit with no issue.

Spending the extra $$$ for a full size and having the peace of mind is worth it in my opinion. The shop even balanced it for free

Upsized my spare tire 285/70/17 (wheel 17" FN FX Pro). Just needed a little hammer time to make it fit under truck bed. Also the exhaust pipe was millimeter close to the tire for a year or so, I keep pushing it away but keeps coming back closer. The zip tie was a fail and I tried strong ones, still breaks understandably. Few weeks ago, swapped out the spare into the mix (balanced w/ tpms swap) and moved one of the used wheel/tire under the truck. Got all my wheels labeled from inside so all get used somewhat equally.
