How many people here would buy a new land cruiser pickup over a new tacoma if it was an option?

I was checking mine as well to see if we were still stuck in 1999.

My grandfather started driving just before VE day, bought his first the day the war rations ended after VJ. He said that right up until the late 50's you always sold a car before it hit 30k miles, because it was pretty much toast after that. He thought that the "new" rule of selling before you roll 100 was a damn miracle. I grew up in that era, that any car that rolled six digits was a worn out jalopy, immediately destined for the salvage auction.

Nowadays you see cars on the dealer's used lot with as high as 150k on the clock. That's wild.

I'd buy one over a tacoma, already have an LC 80 but I've been wanting a 70 series, specifically a 79 series for a while.

Oh yeah! I heard there is along wait.

Actually prefer the looks of the LC over the Tacoma, doesn’t look like it is trying to prove something, while underneath it is a beast, while the Tacoma looks tough and the chassis is kinda wimpy in comparison.

Wouldn’t mind both the Ute and the Wagon.

The older it gets, the better it was!
I grew up in the 60s-70s-80s vehicles….were such POS, we just didn’t know any better. Really wasn’t until Toyota and Honda came along that you realized a vehicle could break the 100K mark and beyond. It is amazing how far we have come. Every time I get into my Tacoma, can’t believe how nice it is, rides very well, almost car like, has more than enough power while getting halfway decent fuel consumption to boot. My old ‘76 F250 with a 390, would get 8-10 if you’re lucky, was like riding on a spring board. That thing had 3 engines before it hit 100K. We did work the hell out of it though.

Jeeps aren’t too too bad for what it is, but I hear ya. Betting the ‘24 Tacoma is going to be nice with the coil sprung rear. I should try and test drive the new Tundra when my truck goes in for service. Or maybe I shouldn’t might come home with a different truck…

1979 dad needed a work car, we went to look at the new Chevy Citation on a Saturday, the salesman would not take the cover on their only Citation in the showroom until the unveiling on Monday. Dad went down the street bought a 1980 Blue SR5 Tercel 5sp. and proceeded to put on a trouble free 150k miles and never looked back !

Man dodged a bullet too, the Citation had the awful Rochester Vari-jet computer controlled mixture carburetor that basically never worked right, that 2.8L v6 was a heavy turd

When we met, My wife to be had a hatchback Citation, when I built our house I put 4x8' sheets of plywood in with the front seats pushed all the way forward, head rests removed, scrunch down while peeping over the dash, I could almost completely close the hatch... 8' 2x4's I could close the hatch !

Good move! Those Citations were POS. My dad made fun of me to no end for buying Jap Crap when I bought the ‘85 4Runner. Then all these years later when I had the 1st Gen for 20 years, are you still driving that!? Yep has over 400K on it. Just recently the engine started giving me issues.

I would have purchased the Cruiser pick up given the option and paid another $5-$10K for the diesel. Since we are wishing here, I'd prefer the LC Troopy over the truck. I imported a JDM Mitsubishi Pajero Diesel five years ago and it's been my daily driver since getting the Tacoma but I've been driving both. Cool little intercooled turbo diesel - albeit with right hand drive, but it makes getting the mail out of the box on the way up the driveway easier.

Some of the badass, armoured, Left-hand-drive, LC70s in use at a minesite I was working at. Check out those bumpers! Check out the on-board fire suppression. The best thing about them, is they are not as big as they look. They are actually a bit smaller than a Tacoma I would say.

A former boss had a story about his dad buying a new car every two years due to living in the rust belt (lower Michigan).

Wheel chock improperly placed! That's a violation. :boink:

I wish my company was that cool. All of our sites use F150/350s as our light-duty shuttles. And also lab vehicles. And sales vehicles too. It's a veritable F-series sausage party around here. :( By the time the truck gets handed down from sales to plant ops to lab and then finally we will let it die in the hands of mine maintenance... you really don't want to ride in it by the time it gets there.

(At least in NA. The Euro sites use hiluxs, not sure what the SA mine uses.)

The LC70s at this mine are almost exclusively for underground shuttles, hence the lights and fire suppression. They use Fords etc to take guys out to the surface workings. They don’t have license plates for the local roads and I don’t think they can register them. I believe most of them are re-fitted with wet brakes as well, as the trip into the earth is steep and long.
