I was looking to buy in March. I was interested in the Colorado but it had a 5 month wait list. That was too long, so the 2016 was DEFINITELY too long of a wait.

I'd say my biggest deciding factor was timing. I did like the 2nd gen styling more and its proven engine. I don't like the front end of the 16 but I did want all the other features.

I had a short debate with myself on a 15 vs 16. What swayed me to a 15 was:

    1. I have been stung in the past where 1st model year after significant mechanical change resulted in gremlins that total pissed me off. I have always had fantastic luck with buying the last model year before a change.
    2. Cost. The same trim level in a 16 was going to run me at least $6 - 7k more than what the 15 cost me.
    3. Accessory availability - Waiting for the market to spin up wasn't of interest.
    4. Love the mod detail on this site.

I had only seen pics of the 16 when I made my decision. Now that they are out and I had a chance to experience one, my perspective on the 16 is:

    1. Front end. Not a fan. Maybe it will grow on me but for now. Nada.
    2. Interior. Nice update but not earth shattering. Biggest issue is lack of headroom with the sunroof.. Being 6'3, that is an issue.
    3. Engine - A tad too benign for my taste on the lower end. Fuel economy will be great with no load and highway but really, not much / if any at city or off-road.

Wasn't a debate for me. I bought mine for one purpose back in 13. To build the truck like I wanted. When I finally saw the 16 I'm glad I got the 13. There are a few things I like about the 16 (not the looks but that will grow on me) but I've got so much money tied up in mine and it will be paid for in less than a year. I'll keep mine until the wheels fall off.

They are stock taillights that I took apart and painted to match the truck.

I got a 2015 because I wasn't all in with the interior and the long looking nose of the 2016. I also wasn't into trying out the new engine either.

I typically put about $5-8k into a vehicle in the first year just to make things the way I want them, then let it be for years. With a new model that is usually hard to do, by the time aftermarket stuff catches up the vehicle is a few years old and its just not the same.

Test drove the 2016. drove like a car. Some cool bells and whistle but nothing extravagent in the interior. exterior looks alright, doesn't match up with previous models. and the front of the vehicle looks like they wanted to implement the look of the new 4runner( headlights and overall shape) with a grill that matches competing vehicles (ugly). i bought my truck in February this year drove it off the lot with 4 miles on it and didn't even test drive before signing papers(with the 2nd gen you can do that). Ive own Tacoma's my whole life and i know how reliable they are built. Couldn't be happier with my choice. This new tacoma isn't for the tacoma fan boys this ones for gmc, dodge, ford customers toyota wants to bring to the dark side. Either way my 2015 Tacoma is badass( the color is amazing too)IMG_0306.jpg enough said.

I bought a 15 because Toyota did not make the 4cyl available with manual transmission and two wheel drive. I had to get a 4wd to get a manual.

The TRD supercharger is the main reason I went for the second gen.

I just didn't want to deal with the issues that always occur with the first year redesign. I'm glad this truck has been around as long as it has so the little issues have been worked out for me.

    tires so far
New engine and new trany adds up to new problems. I had been kicking tires at toyota dealers and they would not move on price. They went to the build it site and pressed print and said bring a check for this much and you can have a truck. It was late sept and I noticed no trd off roads at the dealer I had been looking at. I started looking online and not many showing. I saw one in a dealer and went in and they would give me 2800 off the asking but my wife didnt like the colour of the one [red] so he looked around other dealers in the area. They ended up trucking me one down from prince George about 8 hrs away from here so I got the second to last trd off road access in British Columbia. I paid 38,400 all in and the new ones are asking around 44000. Way too much money and I can buy a few add ons for the money I saved

I made the same decision after seeing what the 2016 would look like in the base trim that you describe. The new 2016 grill on the SR5 and TRD trim levels, especially the magnetic grey with painter bumpers, look fine - but on the least expensive base SR model - the grill and bumper combo do not pass muster.

Plus, I found a dealer willing to let go of a base 2015 4wd Access Cab that has 4 cylinder package with a 5 speed manual for $22.5 after negotiations. These days a new truck with 4wd usually starts around $30K.

I'm also firmly in the established drive train camp - but hope the first year improvements work out well their new owners.

Here is the 2016 barebones Access Cab:

In comparison, my 2015 AC - in base 4x4 trim:

I only went in to look at a 2016 model, but the price they quoted me on a 2015 was too low to pass up, ended up driving it out that night lol.

Yeah not to bash the 16 owners but I feel that front end looks much better on the 2nd gen. Although I will say the grill doesn't look quite so out of proportion in person... But still like the 2nd gen better.
