How many waited for a 3rd Gen but went with a MINT 2nd Gen?

Wondering how many of you were patiently waiting for a 3rd Gen, saw the lack of MPG stats and went with a new 2015 or mint 14,13 and saved considerably less?

My story started 6 years ago when my 2000 4x4 V6 Manuel AC Tundra SR5 with over 200K miles failed its Frame inspection. My buddy had just gotten double Blue Book value for his old Tacoma to put down a new 2012 Tacoma. I was licking my chops for a great deal on a new 13 Tacoma. Instead Toyota was not going with the Double Blue Book direction.

I was upset but still was thankful for the new Frame replacement. Not sure other car companies would do this Free of Charge. I new my truck would go another 100K or more but still wanted a new truck. Instead I kept the truck and bought a small fuel efficient fun commuter. (2008 VW GTI) The GTI has 1/10 the reliability of a Toyota Truck but the fun factor does balance it all out.

Fast forward to 6 years later. The GTI is paid off. The Tundra has little things going wrong yet engine and transmission mint. (Water leak from windshield, Heating Knobs broken, Gas door rusted off, Ball joints stiff, Chrome fender flares rusting off, Tail Gate Rusted Shut, Etc.) Decided to sell the Tundra for $2500 (Took three weeks) and was thinking of buying a new 16 SR5 DC4x4 V6 when the "Great" MPG stats came out. Was going to trade the GTI in. To my discouragement the Stats were 20-21 Average. Same as a 2nd Gen 4cyl 4x4.

To end this story. Went with a mint 2013 AC 4cyl SR5 4x4 Auto with 19,500 Miles for $23K and kept the GTI for the warmer months.

Couldnt be happier with my decision.

Same story here basically, had a 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee LTD that was a great vehicle I got in mint condition years ago but recently it just started dissolving around me, front drive shaft broke while driving down the freeway, driver side window started rolling down by itself in the rain, headliner started falling off, sunroof stopped working and it started leaking like a sieve... I just got a new job and my boss took one ride in my Jeep and said, "Dude, we need to get you a new truck" (he already provides me with a work truck, 2009 Ford F-250)....I shopped a lot of trucks for a few months including the new Tacomas, I had budget constraints that would have allowed me to get basically a base 2016 Tacoma (he called me twice during my negotiations to show me new 2016 Tacomas) or a used truck with all the bells and whistles....I was looking at a -great- deal on a 2015 Chevy Colorado and an amazing Frontier but the Frontier made the wife carsick and I had deep rooted concerns about it's reliability, I had found this truck early in my search and the price came down twice in the month that I watched it, I finally picked it up for 23k as well, I have a motorcycle (Suzuki SV650) and a convertible Mercedes Benz (1972 350 SL) for the summer months, the only drawback is that it is a pre-runner (2WD as opposed to 4WD) but I can live with it....I bought it 10 days ago and I F***ing love it, I gave the Jeep to a couple up The Sierras that couldn't get out when it snowed, so I get a new truck AND get to be a hero...Life is good

IMG_20151228_151741416.jpg I wasn't exactly waiting for the 2016 but I did want brand new so I drove a 2016 doublecab TRD Sport and was not impressed at all. The seat wasn't comfortable and the engine noise was pretty loud inside the truck so I decided not to get a 2016. The same dealership had a mint one owner 2014 doublecab TRD Sport that was traded the day before. I drove it and knew that was the truck for me. Nothing against the 2016 but that's just not for me.

I rushed to buy a new 2015 before I got trapped with a minivan engine and tranny that downshifts when you go over a reflector.

I started looking for a 4WD beater truck earlier this year since my wife's job required her to still come in when the weather was bad. I also wanted something that could fit all four of us in it in a pinch. The prices were high, the mileages were high, or typically both. I decided to start looking at new and late models and just replace the 4Runner instead of keeping a third vehicle around. I did not like the looks of the '16s. The GM Twins looked great on paper, but I was skeptical on their long-term reliability. My parents were looking for a full-size to replace their 2013 Tacoma so I just bought it from them instead of them trading it to the dealership.

I did not wait for the 2016 because I assumed it would be more expensive than what I wanted to pay. That was just an assumption because 2016 pricing was not available at the time. Last July I picked up a mint 2014 DCSB Off-road with 21,000 miles for $27k. When I say mint I mean it. The truck was as clean as a new truck would be. I could not find the smallest crumb or a stray hair in any of the nooks and crannies of the cab. None of my prior pre-owned vehicle purchases (some dealer detailed) have been as clean as my Taco was. I'm not sure how the prior owner put on 21K miles without leaving behind a little piece of dirt in a crack or crevice. Purchased private party too so I saved a ton on sales tax. The prior owner also did some nice upgrades such as clear bra film on the front end, extra dark tint and newer larger Michelin tires. Prior owner was super anal about this truck and planned to use the money from the sale to fund the total restoration of a classic FJ Cruiser. I think I came out way ahead of what I could have gotten in a new 2015 or 2016 model.

I was starting to look for my next vehicle when the 2016 announcements started coming out early this year. There were a few nice features but I decided I didn't want the first-year risks of a completely new powerplant combo so I started looking for a 2nd gen. I found that I could get a better deal on a 2015 through Costco than a couple years older model from the private party market here in Southern California. Haven't looked back since.

I got a 2015 because I think the 2016s are ugly and I don't like buying the first year model of anything. 11 years to get the kinks worked out on my 15. Plus I found an OffRoad in a manual which was exactly what I was looking for, and it was a CPO with only 7500 miles so I saved some coin and got a 100k bumper-to-bumper warranty.

That's exactly what I did. The minor increase in MPG, plus the price bump, plus the inflated interest rates all contributed to me going with a 2014 with low mileage. Saved a bundle and I couldn't be happier.

at a dealer today buying plugs for a 2nd gen and on the showroom floor sat a 16 dealer lifted sr5 access cab with 285's for a mear $40k. Yikes. I bought my 13' dcsb sr5 off the lot for $29k. added a lift, tires, wheels, and topper, for about $3500. I know dealer goodies are inflated, nice looking ride, but still.
