In CT, before any haggling, I got approx 5% off from three and approx 9% off from two. This is before I did any haggling. I also am varying somewhat wildly on trade-in from a low of 29k to a 33k, which is a swing of 10%ish.

In my mind Im shooting for 33k for trade and no less than 10% off MSRP.

I'll try and speak with some logic and fact here to try and assist anyone looking into the "black hole" of a car deal/sale. I'll cover a few areas to try and shed light.

Facts first: There is MSRP, INVOICE COST, DESTINATION, HOLD BACK, INCENTIVES, and TRUE DEALER COST that all contribute to the overall picture.

Additionally, there are floor plans, advertising incentives/co-ops, and allocation compensations based on unit volume and production overages that also contribute to a dealers net cost.

Foreign Manufacturers didn't provide holdbacks to their dealers until later years- Early- Mid 1990's.

I'll use this example of real numbers to begin with and work through the other hypothetical costs and details from there:

    2018 Tacoma - Trim: 4WD Double Cab TRD Off Road 6' Bed V6 AT. Powered by a 6-Speed Automatic 3.5L V6 Powered by a 6-Speed Automatic 3.5L V6. Horsepower: 278 @ 6000 RPM. Torque: 265 @ 4600 RPM
    MSRP
    $36,725
    Invoice Price
    $34,023
    Destination Fee
    $995
    Holdback
    $735
    Dealer Cost
    $34,284

You will first notice the Base spread(no options) between MSRP and Invoice is 7%..sorry guys there isn't 10% to work with unless the unit has a ton of dealer add-ons or huge option list. We'll assume you will get the fact that holdback (paid by manufacturer to dealer upon sale of unit) simple washes out the largest portion of destination fee to net a true dealer cost listed above - but that's not everything the dealer has to consider in the sale - They pay a floor plan amount of 1% - 6% (I've seen higher in some economies)of the invoice cost of each unit to have it on their lot to sell, and they have to pay for each unit in full at some point. (some dealers own their inventory outright but VERY few)....these monthly payments go toward the unit cost, BUT, there is interest involved just like every loan...varies by situation, so in the instance of a vehicle that has sat on the lot for 5 months they need to add the interest amount they have paid on floor plan to the cost of owning that unit. SOMETIMES if they are in a local advertising pool, they will get a manufacturers rebate for x% of their advertising spend back...maybe $50 a unit or so which can offset floor plan interest incurred. Further, in an instance of dealer trades, the original dealer that ordered the vehicle keeps the holdback and incentives as would the dealer that traded them on the unit they traded. If it was a dealer acquisition (buy from dealer to dealer with no trade) the buying dealer will own the vehicle for invoice without the benefit of holdback or incentives. Certain times of year or on production overages, there may be a dealer incentive (rebate) to bump up the sale of units, the dealer may or may not share the rebates with a retail buyer - but most often do to get their sales numbers up for allocations and to pick up the backend (finance and insurance) profits by selling a greater number of units.(like the current 2018 rebates/factory incentives). Also other variables that effect cost are things like tripped vehicles (sold and delivered) that come back because financing didn't go through...and the buyer loses a small amount of money- so they own the vehicle with say 200 miles on it for a few hundred dollars less. Also, lot damage or transport damage, banged fender gets fixed, insurance pays more than repair amount. Same, with say a hail storm. They now own the vehicle for a bit less. The reality is there are many invoice providing sources available to todays consumers, the more popular a vehicle is the less likely it will be sold at invoice or slightly below.....also the invoice cost listed above is for a standard model....EVERY option beyond that (TECH, PREMIUM, bed cover, tube steps, floor mats, etc.) changes the invoice amount, floor plan, and ultimately dealer cost (easily by thousands these days). Only in the perfect alignment of all elements and timing coming together will a vehicle ever be able to be purchased much less than invoice, which on a popular vehicle is almost always about the best you can expect, unless the above things come in to play. There are salesmen to pay, lights to keep on, etc. And unless they are making a ton on the trade or financing, they cant afford to give away the entire front end. All this said, with regard to the posts question, assuming the intent is what constitutes a decent deal? Anything around invoice on a Tacoma is a pretty fair deal. ( I don't work in the car business- but once upon a time I did at a fairly high level).

It is a 2018... there is a separate thread for 2018's. That deal is a sweet deal for 2018. Dealers are making deals to unload their stock. Can we stick to the 2019's?

Ordered my 2019 CEMENT TRD OR DCLB w/tech, all weather door sill and floor liners, bed mat, wheel locks, spare tire lock, etc. = $39,914 MSRP / Paid $37166 + tx. No d&h or other fees. 7% off MSRP, exactly the invoice amount, no other fees, dealer made $465.00 (holdback spread) + $132 advertising and floor plan rebate (so about $600) and didn't have it sitting on their lot for a single minute - both happy, win/win. In CO we pay the license fees when we plate the vehicle at the DMV not to the dealership, and there are no "title" or "doc" fees involved unless some sleazy dealer charges to process your paperwork.

Sorry, but affluent and car payment don't belong together.

0% is a hella of a good deal for interest rate, its like free money and with how the Tacoma holds its value you will be well off when you sell

But really if you are NOT getting 0% interest you should be putting at least 20-30% down plus your sales tax, make your payment look better and positive on loan

How much under invoice can I get a TRD ACCESSCAB AT for? I asked the dealer if I could do invoice and didn’t even flinch and said yes.

Haven’t used my iPad since I saw that 2019 trd Pro so now I was lucky enough to screen shot it since that page was still on one of my safari tabs. It disappeared from their website by the next morning so probably sold as soon as they opened their doors.5927FD25-B073-4920-ABF5-04D0DD931D92.jpg
