Previous owner used to haul heavy loads, so he put an AAL on it and TRD front suspension with a lift and custom rear suspension for added weight capacity. I recently installed a tow package (Curt with lifetime warranty) So i will definitely see what this thing can handle as far as weight goes.
I am considering buying a 1972 20 foot long trailer. Can I pull it? The owner said his neighbor has a taco and has a bigger trailer than his. That, is most likely a v6 though. I have a class III receiver hitch, an add a leaf, and very stiff shocks. I've pulled before and been fine but never something that big. My manual says 6500 with rwd and a hitch. The owner has no idea how much this thing weighs. He said his half ton ford did fine. Not sure! I may go hook it up and take it for a test pull. I don't mind making my engine work hard. What I care about is my transmission, clutch, and drivetrain. Advice will be helpful. If you are just gonna laugh at the fact I am even trying to pull with a 4cl, please don't even bother replying. If you have some good honest advice, ill take it. I will not be traveling long distances with it. Just from park to park.

Ive pulled a 20ft with my v6 and it hesistated a bit here and there but i have an ultragauge and everything stayed within range. I also have an AAL and a 3" lift so it kinda took some strain off of the tranny.

a 20FT might be a little big for a 4cyl but you never know if you drive right and dont stress out the engine and tranny to much i think youd be ok.

So if I shift at higher rpms should it handle ok? Instead of my normal 2800-3400 shift maybe shift at 3800-4,000 and keep that torque up? Its a manual 5 speed. The aal lifts the rear end up a bit (its a thick ass leaf)

Yah keep power to the wheels, I think if you shift at normal RPM you might end up yanking and pulling slack which will really jack shit up.

Your Taco may not be rated to the 6500lbs you think it is. That is only for the V6 + V6 Tow Package.

Per page 4 of this manual: http://www.toyota.com/t3Portal/document/om/OM35A10U/pdf/sec_6-1.pdf

    You are good for 3500lbs.

Google tells me Class III hitches are usually good for 5,000lbs tops.

Here's an excerpt from the brochure, describing the V6 Tow Package. The V6 Tow Package is (to my knowledge) the key piece that increases the factory rating to 6,500lbs.

I don't really know trailer weights, but this page says for flatbed trailers, 20ft is probably about 2,000lbs:

    http://sltrailers.com/Trailers_101.html

So, if the trailer you are looking at is flatbed, perhaps the answer is yes you are fine? Just don't try hauling your Jeep with it maybe ;)

I think he is talking about a camper trailer...

From what I've looked at you are going to be running at the upper limit and possibly over the rated towing capacity with a loaded camper trailer in that size, esp that age if it has wood framing. It would be hard to say as these vary a great deal depending on the Mfg. Even at slightly over the rating for a short trip you should be fine. IMO

I would take it for a drag up and down the highway and see how it feels. Or look at the specific Mfg web site and see if they have a list of weights.

I did what you said, bent my input shaft, drive shaft is out of phase, and i cant get into 4th gear anymore.

Just kidding. I didnt end up buying the trailer . Hahaha. I'm getting a motorcycle instead.

Good, it will haul the motorcycle but won't haul the trailer.
