    Not even close...
You have to enter a PIN, you have to sign. and you have to wait for approval. And then there is always the idiots with cards that don't work or get declined.

Might as well be in the line at the Bank...

but with cash...you have to deal with an idiot clerk who can't count enough to make change...and then carry loose change around and those stinky dollar bills that have been God knows where... :D

What i want to know is, what is the point to this. What was the argument with the OP and his older co worker. How much cash did he say he has on hand what was his reasoning? Years ago you had cash or check. Im not sure when ATM's came around.

    Disagree..
All I have to do with my debit card is click run as credit or ask the clerk to to and I just get a receipt???

Only issue with a $100 bill is not a lot of places will accept them.. (Small town gas stations, grocery stores, ect)

Among the personal responsibilities of using cash is to carry change. And I'm always happy to declare the proper amount to be returned to me. This is all just personal lifestyle choices. There's no right and wrong for everyone, just right and wrong for you.

I like to use physical money as it operates as a stand alone application completely independent of anything else outside of itself. There are no third parties involved in the actual transaction. Just the buyer and seller... ...and there's something nice about that. :)

There is also no size limitation to a cash transaction. I always buy new cars for cash as it sets me free to bargain for the best price. I've also built homes for cash as businessmen and tradesmen are eager to offer considerable discounts for cash.

To those that only carry cards, let me share a experience with you guys.

Back about a year or so, I was living in San Diego when the power shut down. I used to carry no cash. Only go to the ATM when I needed it. Well the power shut down after the Nuclear Power Plant failed. I had no money to buy anything, no water, no food. The ATMS don't work and banks use computers now to take money out. I was stuck.

Just a little thing to think about. I always carry at least 40 bucks now. 20 for gas and 20 for food should something happen.

Most of the time just enough to buy a can of dip...Grizzly is $1.84 & Cope is $2.04 here but hardly ever more the $10.

I think it has more to do with my spending habits. Other then dip the next lowest priced thing I buy with any regularity is gas. Twice a week I need to put in 17 to 20 gallons in the truck and from there it's groceries. I almost only use a debit card. Don't write or cash checks either...

I do keep a stash of cash at the house that's enough to bail me or a buddy out just in case. :)

There was no argument, I was just trying to see what the norm is out there. I tend to see that the older generations carry cash while people around my age use cards for most of their purchases. Curiosity peaked,

2 years ago I got assaulted and robbed
Had about $400 cash on me (that's highly unusual, by the way), and a debit card

    Someone must have scared them off before they snatched it off of me or they were too dumb to find it;
cause, it was all still on me, afterwards

They did walk-off with my mp3 player, cell phone, and tin of chew though. haha

Ever since then I keep a very minimal amount of money (especially in cash form) on me, and have my debit set so that it won't over-draw

That's inconsiderate of that person to rob you of your tin of chew. You could probably have used some after that frightening experience.

I'm no criminal but wouldn't stealing cell phones be a pretty stupid idea these days? Because of the gps and what not?

Don't the gas stations in your area have generators?
I think three out of the four stations within 5 minutes of where I live have generators for when the power's out.
